Derrick Martin NFL Draft Bio

Martin is a junior who came out early for the draft. He probably would have been better suited to stay for his senior season because he is not polished yet, and it leads to his play being very inconsistent. He no doubt has the athleticism, strength, explosiveness and playing speed to be a good starting cornerback in the NFL who could break up a lot of passes and make interceptions consistently. However, his backpedal/footwork is sloppy and inconsistent, which hinders his ability to consistently transition out of pedal to break and close to break up passes. When he reads the pass correctly, he does a good job of closing quickly on passes in front of him and has shown a willingness to break up the pass with his front arm or by making a very hard hit right after the ball arrives. He needs to work on his footwork, must become more consistent reading the quarterback and route, and must play aggressively on every snap in order to become a productive NFL cornerback.
