Donte Whitner #34 prospect in 2006 NFL Draft.

Donte Whitner NFL Draft Bio

Donte Whitner was one of the elite recruits in the country three years ago straight out of high school. Originally recruited as a corner, but he was able to get playing time as a safety and didn’t let the position go. As a sophomore, despite being slowed by a nagging knee injury, he totaled 69 tackles, four of them registering for a loss. This past season he was one of three Ohio St. defensive backs to earn 1st Team All Big 10, after finishing with career highs of 73 tackles, nine for loss, four sacks, and two interceptions. Donte Whitner is a talented safety prospect who has a lot of talent. He has good athleticism, decent speed and very physical. He patrols around the field looking to tackle someone, and will stop at nothing to get his man. Donte is very aggressive in the secondary and will hit you in the mouth, and then wrap you up to finish the play. He also has very good cover ability. Whitner has played strong safety, but may project better in the free safety spot. Donte Whitner is a versatile player who may even get a look in the corner spot for some teams. Not mater where teams place him he is sure to need a lot of work.

As a strong safety, Whitner is undersized and might be why teams will look at moving him to free safety or the corner. He has exceptional ability to match up in single coverage, but at times gets turned around because he is not used to being locked up man to man. In the strong safety, he may have problems covering tight ends due to a lack of size.

Whitner is a versatile player which makes him an interesting prospect. He is an excellent safety, and could have an immediate impact at that position. On the other hand, he may also have the talent to project as a cornerback for some teams. This is NFL draft is deep at the safety position, but Donte Whitner is probably as talented as any of them. We feel he should slot into the 2nd round and possibly landing in the Top 50 despite all the talented prospects in this draft.
