High school career
Harvey started football late, in junior year of high school. As a senior, he recorded over 150 tackles and 31 sacks, a Maryland state record. He led his team to the 4A State Semi-finals. A five-star recruit, he eventually committed to Florida.

College career
Harvey redshirted his freshman year.

In 2005, he appeared in nine games, recording six tackles and a sack. He did not see the field against some of the more high-profile teams, such as LSU or Georgia.

In 2006, Harvey broke out, playing in 14 games for Florida. His performance in the 2006 BCS National Championship Game against Ohio State, where he recorded 3 sacks, helped the Gators cruise to a victory. He finished the season with 35 tackles and 11 sacks. He was tied second in the SEC for sacks.

2008 Draft
On January 3, 2008, Harvey announced he would forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft early.
