Sidney Rice #30 prospect in 2007 NFL Draft.

Sidney Rice NFL Draft Bio

Sidney Rice (born September 1, 1986, in Gaffney, South Carolina) is a redshirt sophomore football player for the University of South Carolina.

Rice is a native of Gaffney, SC, where he played both football and basketball for the Gaffney Indians. Rice redshirted the 2004 season due to an injury sustained during warmups. In 2005, after missing South Carolina's opening game against the University of Central Florida, Rice had 70 receptions for 1143 yards, averaging 16.3 yards per catch and 103.9 yards per game. He also set a South Carolina single season record with 13 TD catches, surpassing Sterling Sharpe's previous record of 11 TD's.

Rice received a number of accolades from the media after the 2005 season and before the 2006 season. He was placed on the Heisman Watch list by Sports Illustrated, a prominent sports magazine.

During the 2006 season, Rice was held to 0 touchdowns until he went off for 5 touchdowns against Florida Atlantic University. This performance placed him one shy of the NCAA record of 6 TD catches set by Tim Delaney of San Diego State in 1969. Rice continued to perform, but he shared many receptions and yards with fellow Gamecock receiver Kenny McKinley due to having double coverage on Rice constantly. Sidney's 2006 stats (not including the bowl game) consist of a team high in all three major categories. He has 64 receptions for 951 yards and 9 touchdowns. These statistics are even more impressive considering that the Gameocks began the season with Blake Mitchell as the QB. After poor performances the first few weeks and a bad showing by the offensive line, however, the immobile Mitchell was replaced by the faster more atheletic Senior, Syvelle Newton. Later in the season Mitchell returned to the field, and he claimed that starting job back. Rice adjusted to multiple QB changes and still was able to produce for the Gamecocks. Rice has officially declared that he will forgoe his final two seasons to enter the NFL Draft. On December 29, 2006, in the Liberty Bowl against the University of Houston, Rice had another 100 yard performance helping lift the Gamecocks to a 44-36 victory and also giving him the school record for 100 yard recieving games in a career with 11.

On January 7. 2006, USC coach Steve Spurrier announced through a media spokesperson that Rice was leaving USC for the 2007 NFL Draft.
