Michael Griffin #26 prospect in 2007 NFL Draft.

Michael Griffin NFL Draft Bio

Michael Devin Griffin (born January 4, 1985, in Austin, Texas) is currently a senior at the University of Texas at Austin and is the starting strong safety for the Texas Longhorn football team. Griffin is projected as a first to second-round prospect in the 2007 NFL Draft.

High school career
Griffin was coached in football by Jeff Ables at Bowie High School. He played running back and also defensive back. He rushed for 2,127 yards and 25 TDs along with averaging 23.4 yards per catch in his final two seasons, earning honorable mention all-state (5A) honors as at running back, and All-Central Texas at both running back and defensive back.

College career
Griffin started his college football career in 2003 as a true freshman. Griffin played all 12 games that season, but only started against Texas Tech and Washington State. Griffin recorded 65 tackles, with two sacks and forced three fumbles.

Griffin's sophomore season, 2004, he also played 12 games, starting one. He registered 49 tackles, one sack, blocked two punts, tallied an interception, forced a fumble, and recovered a fumble.

For Griffin's junior season, 2005, he started 12 of 13 games at strong safety. Griffin was honored with a second-team All-Big 12 selection. Griffin led the team with 124 tackles, along with three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and one caused fumble. Griffin tied Texas' single-season record with four punt blocks. Griffin also broke up a pass in Texas' 41-38 Rose Bowl win against the University of Southern California for the National Championship.

Through the 2006 football season, he had appeared in 37 career games including 15 starts and posted 238 tackles, 11 tackles-for-loss, three sacks, four interceptions, five caused fumbles, five fumble recoveries and a UT school record six blocked punts.

Personal
Griffin is an honors student majoring in liberal arts. His twin brother, Marcus Griffin, is also a defensive back at UT. Their parents, Ronald and Mae, are both retired from the United States Armed Services. He has a pit bull and enjoys attending dog shows. Michael and Jon Paul Garcia own Texas Made Kennels, a business in which they breed and sell pit bulls. He also enjoys watching Animal Planet and going bass fishing.

Strengths:
Michael Devin Griffin is a very smooth and athletic safety who possesses great speed. Michael is tough, physical, aggressive and likes to lay that big hit. Griffin is exceptional in coverage and has fluid hips, supports the run well and covers a lot of ground having a good burst of speed to close. His motor is always running and is a playmaker with good leaping ability and ball skills. Michael has been a productive player and has a lot of experience playing against some of the best competition in college. He is an outstanding kick blocker and special teams player who should carve out a career in the NFL on that alone. He has top notch potential and all of intangibles a team is looking for.

Weaknesses:
Michael Griffin is not a large player. Sometimes makes mistakes by missing tackles while trying to deliver that knock-out blow. He is not super instinctive as a player and tends to depend on his athleticism a little too much. He has difficulties with large blockers in the box and gets manhandled as a result. Scouts worry that he might not be durable enough while playing against the bigger more physical players in the NFL given his size.

Notes:
Michael Griffin Has a twin brother, Marcus, who is also a defensive back for the Longhorns. He is a versatile player who has just about everything you look for physically from the safety spot. He comes as a product of a great Texas team that seems to deliver great defensive backs. All in all Michael Devin Griffin is a great player and pro prospect who should be taken near the middle of the first round.
