Gaines Adams #7 prospect in 2007 NFL Draft.

Gaines Adams NFL Draft Bio

Gaines Adams, (born on June 8, 1983), is a defensive end for Clemson. He is currently a prospect for the 2007 NFL Draft.

High school career
Adams attended Fork Union Prep in 2001 and recorded 58 tackles, 22 sacks, and two interceptions in 10 games. He was a three year starter at Cambridge Academy where he was a dominant wide receiver and defensive end. His coach during high school was former University of South Carolina quarterback, Steve Taneyhill. In 2000, his team won the state title. During that year, Cambridge shut out four different teams, beating one team 80-0. They had suffered only one loss that season to archrival King Academy. He had 158 career receptions for 4,394 yard and 65 touchdowns, as well as 341 tackles, 10 interceptions, and 33 sacks in his career, and was a two-time all-state honoree. He chose Clemson over Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. He had narrowed down his choices to North Carolina and Clemson, then signed with Clemson after the Tar Heels unexpectedly rescinded their offer.

College career
Adams redshirted in 2002. For various reasons, some student-athletes opt to not compete with the team for one of their four years attending a university but to only attend classes and practices with the team; this process is known as redshirting.

In 2003, as a redshirt freshman, he did not see much action as the second-team defensive end, only totaling 15 tackles and a sack.

In 2004, he had 35 tackles with 8 sacks, and two blocked punts playing on special teams. For his hard work on special teams, Adams was awarded the 12th Man Award for Clemson's defense. Adams considered coming out for the NFL Draft after his sophomore year, but after the underclassman panel gave him a conservatively low ranking he decided to stay for his junior year.

Adams' 2005 junior year was the year he broke out. Adams totaled 56 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and forced three fumbles while starting at "bandit" defensive end.

For Adams' senior year, 2006, he was slated to be among the best defensive ends in the college football. Adams lived up to his reputation by starting all 12 games, recording 10.5 sacks, causing 2 fumbles and recovering 3. Adams is projected to be a top pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. In addition, Adams was named to all five official All-America teams acknowledged by the NCAA in 2006, one of seven unanimous All-Americans this year.

Strengths:
Gaines Adams is an outstanding athlete who is extremely quick, agile ad possesses very good speed. Gaines has a tremendous first step and a great burst to close. Gaines Adams has very long arms and uses his hands well. Adams has a big solid frame which has room to get bigger and develop physically. Gaines Adams always looks fluid when dropping into coverage and is a terror in opponent's backfields. Gaines Adams just seems to have a knack for getting to the quarterback. Gaines Adams has been a very productive and disruptive player who has been versatile and also has the ability to play outside linebacker for a 3-4 team at the pro level.

Weaknesses:
Adams does not have the ideal bulk you look for at an elite level, and would be looked upon to add some weight for the team that drafts him. As good as Gaines Adams is against the pass, he does not play the run nearly as well. He will need to get stronger as he struggles when blockers are able to clamp down on him. Can play with better pad level and leverage and might be a bit of a DE / OLB 'tweener. Gaines Adams will sometimes get overly aggressive and run himself out of plays.

Notes:
Played eight-man football in high school and then spent a year at Fork Union Prep before coming to Clemson where he redshirted in 2002. Gaines Adams was close to entering the NFL draft after his junior season but was given a very conservative grade by the NFL's underclassmen advisory panel and chose to go back to school. He has demonstrated that he is as good any defensive end in the past two years and has those top notch credentials that teams look for. If nothing else, Adam's is a natural pass rusher and should get some serious looks based on that alone.
