Jason Hatcher is somewhat of a "teweener" in that he is 6-foot-6 and 280-plus pounds, which is excellent for a strong-side defensive end, but he lacks the explosiveness and burst to threaten the corner as a speed/edge rusher, which is why about half the teams are looking at him as a defensive end and half as a defensive tackle. His tendency to play upright and without leverage so often is what hinders his play at defensive tackle.

Hatcher does not stay focused or maintain his concentration well on every snap and it leads to him popping straight upright at the snap and becoming a non-factor way too often. Once an offensive lineman locks up on him, he struggles to consistently shed and get involved in the play. He is not an explosive off-the-ball player, which will keep him from being able to threaten the corner as a speed/edge rusher.
