Maurice Drew NFL Draft Bio
Maurice Drew NFL Draft Bio

Drew is a junior who came out early for the draft. He is a great kid who actually changed the name on the back of his jersey from Drew to Jones-Drew during 2005 season when his grandfather, who he was very close with, passed away during the season. He is a very well built short running back who really competes and fights extremely hard every time he touches the ball and has shown a knack for keeping feet vs. hard hits and low/arm tackles. He is a very dangerous runner in the open field who will be able to consistently make big plays when he gets the ball out in space, especially as a punt returner. One of the big things that can hold Drew back is that he has struggled to consistently stay in the lineup for an entire season at UCLA and will have the same problems in the NFL if he gets too many touches. Overall, Drew has the talent to be a playmaker in the NFL, but if he does not go to a team that will use him in its offense properly, he will struggle to be consistently productive. He would be a good starter in an offense like the Rams or the Eagles, but would be more of a third-down back in more traditional offense. In addition to his play as a running back, Drew will be a very dangerous punt returner and a solid kickoff returner.

Drew is a very good athlete with the quick feet, agility and elusiveness to avoid tackles and make things happen, especially dangerous once he gets into the open field. He has very good hands catching the ball and has consistently shown the ability to adjust and make tough catches seem easy. Despite being short, he runs aggressively with the ball, will lower shoulder to deliver blow to tackler and consistently keeps feet vs. hard hits to gain yards after contact. He is also a very dangerous return man, (especially on punt returns) and has consistently made big returns to help UCLA win the field position battle and will be able to do the same in the NFL.

Obviously, Drew is shorter than ideal and his lack of size hinders his ability to hold ground vs. blitzing linebackers and to consistently break tackles. He lacks the size to be a strong, tackle breaking inside runner. He does not do a good job of protecting the ball and will fumble -- he needs to wrap up the ball with both hands. He has missed games due to injury at UCLA, so his durability in the NFL is a major question mark. He is quicker than fast and while he has an explosive burst to get behind the defense he lacks premier playing speed and will get caught from behind in the NFL.
