Jesse Mahelona is an explosive defensive specialist who can penetrate a defense and excels at making plays in opponents backfields. With very good quickness, and decent speed Jesse Mahelona is an outstanding pass rusher who is great at getting pressure on the quarterback. Mahelona is a good athlete, demonstrates decent strength and has an excellent motor. Jesse possesses great instincts, has the ability to locate the ball quickly and has good range to make plays laterally. Jesse always works hard and has been very productive for his two years at the DI level. Jesse Mahelona is a talented defensive tackle who is still improving and has shows some decent upside.

Jesse Mahelona has only average size and needs to continue to get bigger for teams to use his abilities. Being smaller then what teams would like in the tackle spot, Jesse will get pushed around at the pro level. Though Mahelona has demonstrated a gift at pass rushing he does not hold up real well versus the run do to his lack of size and the fact he is not a great tackler. As to be expected, scouts are concerned how he is going to perform in a head-to-head match up against the massive offensive linemen at the pro level. Jesse Mahelona needs to add some creativeness to his game as he tends focus too much on rushing the passer and he will need to refine his technique as he does not shed blocks well.

Jesse Mahelona is originally from Hawaii and burst onto the scene as a junior for the Vols after transferring from Orange Coast Community College. Jesse is a classic one-gapper who is among the best pass rushing interior linemen in the draft. Jesse Mahelona will probably find a spot on a team that can run defensive schemes to take advantage of his skill sets.
