Eric Winston has excellent size, with a long wing span and the solid frame to add more bulk. Eric is very athletic and quick for a tackle. For a guy his size he has amazing footwork and his mobility is first class. He uses these tools to effectively pull and block in space. Winston is very competitive, physical and uses his long reach and hands well and has a good initial punch. Eric is known to be an intelligent player who works hard and has a lot of top notch intangibles that could make him a great player. In college he showed improvement each and every game and he still has a ton of upside and potential.

Question number one surrounding Eric Winston is the major knee injury he suffered as a junior in 2004. The injury still looks like it slows him down a bit as he sometimes has trouble with speed rushers. Other questions that arise are, can he play left tackle or will he have to move to the right side? Even though he is a team leader with experience he is still a raw talent and that is mastering the nuances and technique of the position. Second question surrounds the fact he needs to gain some weight. Can he get much bigger and stronger without losing his quickness and mobility?

Eric Winston came into college as a tight end and looked like an elite left tackle prospect prior to the injury. Winston’s draft stock dropped in 2005 when his play diminished, which might be attributed to his not yet being 100% healthy after the injury. Typically it takes at least two seasons to return to form after the type of surgery he had. One luck team may get a steal if Eric Winston slips a little on Draft Day and then reverts back to the form he showed in 2003 and 2004. Teams that draft in the late first round might try and hit a home run with this guy. Do not be surprised to see him late in the first round or near the middle of the second. Still an elite prospect, but a bit of a risk.
