Michael Huff NFL Draft Bio
Michael Huff NFL Draft Bio

Michael Huff is a very versatile player. He has been moved all over the secondary and could find himself at either safety spot or cornerback in the NFL. Huff has played most of his career at safety and has demonstrated he can quick reads and use great ability to sit back and make the play. Michael Huff has good vision on the field and has excellent instincts which allow him to break on passes. He jumps underneath routes well and can lay big hits. Huff also has good ball skills and shows nice hands when the interception is there. He has good footwork and hips and can change directions well and shows good closing speed. When he reads run, Huff shows a good burst to the ball and is a very dependable tackler. He generally takes good angles to the ball, but sometimes gets himself caught up around the line and doesn't get back out to the flanks. When tight ends and receivers engage him, he must do a better job of taking on and shedding blocks. As a result, Huff may be best suited for the free safety spot rather than the strong, even though that is where he has played. As a free safety, his best asset, his coverage skills, would be front and center.

Once in awhile Michael tends to gamble and try to make the big play, and instead he gets beat for a big gain or TD. He'll need to improve on his technique just a little bit to be pro ready. He's moved around his whole career at Texas between cornerback and safety, so he's a little bit of a 'tweener, but he should be able to make the adjustment to one position.

Michael Huff is a player who offers a variety of possibilities. Huff definitely has more positives then negatives, which means terrific upside that coaches love. He should be a good special teams contributor and has the smarts and instincts to step in right away at either safety spot. If an NFL team drafts him with the intention of playing him at corner, it may take a season to get his technique right for the position. But he definitely has the ability to make the move. Huff should sneak into the late 1st Round, and will almost certainly be gone by the middle of the 2nd.
