Ronnie Brown's Biography

Ronnie Brown is a running back who has size, strength, agility and speed. Brown has excellent hands and can make some great plays catching the ball coming out of the back field. His powerful frame gives him the ability to power his way threw the defensive line and over defenders. Brown gained 1,931 yards on 206 carries (9.4 avg.) and scored 25 touchdowns and caught 15 passes for 343 yards (22.9 avg.) and three scores as a senior at Cartersville High School. He also competed as a free safety and intercepted three passes, earning Georgia Class 2A Player of the Year. He scored three touchdowns and rushed for 180 yards on 20 carries in a 27-21 win in the state championship game that year. The three-year starter rushed for 936 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior.
  • Ronnie’s physical abilities are impressive. He has a very thick upper body, well-developed muscles in the chest, shoulders, arms, legs. Ronnie shows well above average strength as a downhill power oriented runner and has shown the burst of speed to turn the corner.
  • Ronnie runs with good body lean, showing the tremendous leg drive to power through arm tackles. Using good balance and forward lean allows him to run through initial contact. He attacks the holes with good power, staying low in his pads and is quick to turn over and reach his top speed. He has a natural running instinct and a good feel for the smallest openings along the line; he does a good job of using his blocks, showing the lateral range to separate in the open. Ronnie maintains balance on the move, keeping his feet and squaring his shoulders to push the pile and gain good inside yardage.
  • He has demonstrated the ability to be a very effective slot receiver, showing natural, soft hands and hand extension to catch away from the body.

Overall

Ronnie is a big strong running back with tremendous upside. His initial burst and explosion allows him to clear the line of scrimmage and reach the perimeter in stride. Ronnie does a good job of using his blocks, showing the lateral range. He has the natural hands to secure the ball with ease when competing for the high pass. Shows a good base to stand in and take on blitzers, keeping his balance and feet in order to sustain blocks. Offensively and defensively he plays well.

Our Thoughts

Ronnie Brown is the biggest running back in the draft and he has character in abundance. I think the Dolphins looked to make a move down in this draft if a deal could be made that would keep them still picking in the top 10 but no team was willing to pay the price to move up. However, the Dolphins took a quality running back that will be able to step in to the void left by Ricky Williams almost right away. Brown’s playing style should fit the power oriented offense that Nick Saban is designing. We feel that having Brown pounding the ball up the middle as a runner added with his ability to catch the ball coming out of the backfield will suite Miami very well. Overall a great pick by the Dolphins.
