2005 NFL Draft

Alex Smith's Biography

Alex is not only a very skilled athlete but a very intelligent player to boot. He comes from a family that is full of football tradition. Doug Smith, his father, was a standout player at Weber State and his uncle, John Smith is the current head coach at Michigan State. The family involvement in the great game of football will show great rewards as he not only has the physical tools to play the game but the knowledge to back it up. Alex is tall, lanky and swift for a quarterback with excellent quickness, agility and he is extremely mobile. Smith is 6 foot 3 inches tall but only weighs 213 pounds so he will need to put on some muscle to compete at the pro level.
  • His arm shows great potential as he is very accurate at close to medium range but as yet hasn’t demonstrated the ability to throw deep patterns. Squares his shoulders and delivers the ball on target consistently. Operates mostly out of the shotgun when lining up under center, he has the foot speed to get back, but shows some difficulty setting his feet and is prone to throwing off his back foot, more so than when he takes the shotgun snap
  • Plays smart ball and is not the type that will throw the ball up for grabs He reads the play well and does a very good job of scanning the field for secondary targets before tossing the ball away rather than forcing it into traffic. Shows very good ability to hit his targets in stride and is quick to see and feel the pass rush
  • Likes to run the ball himself at the first sign of pressure. Can run well in traffic but we would like to see him do this too much at the professional level. Shows good accuracy when on the run, but does lose some velocity behind his deep tosses when rolling out
  • Rarely makes a bad throw, but he has been caught in the backfield because he held on to the ball too long. During this season seven of his 13 sacks led to fumbles
  • Smith has demonstrated some good leadership skills, though he tends to be a quiet leader
  • Has plenty of toughness and is able to take a hit

Overall

Alex has very good upside, but he would be better served in a wide-open attack, where he is better at improvising. He should play to his strengths operating mostly out of the shotgun. In a west coast offensive game he should excel. He reads the play well, runs effectively; he is big, strong and mobile. Should have a great NFL career ahead of him

Our Thoughts

The 49ers took the player they were expected to take even though we feel they should have gone another direction. Now, can sign him? Smith will not likely see much playing time as a rookie and that should play into the 49ers hands just fine. Expect the 49ers to go with Tim Rattay this year, and develop Smith to into an NFL starter at a slow and steady pace. It may take a year or possibly two to cultivate Smith into an NFL starter but lets face it, Smith is Mike Nolan's and the 49ers guy for the long haul. Lets hope they can sign him.
