San Francisco 49ers Chronological History

The San Francisco 49ers have the distinction of being the first major league professional sports franchise on the West Coast. The 49ers entered professional football in 1946 and matured, nationally and locally, when the club was granted a National League franchise in 1950.

The team earned its name from the surge of goldminers to the San Francisco area during 1849, thus the nickname the San Francisco 49ers. It is the only name the team has been affiliated with and San Francisco is the only city in which it has resided.

San Francisco is the best all-time Super Bowl championship performing team with 5 wins in 5 attempts. With great QB’s like Montanna and Young this franchise has always had great playoff performances.

1946 - The 49ers were founded in 1946 as members of the All-American Football Conference. They joined the NFL in 1949 after playing in the final AAFC Championship Game.

1950 - San Francisco fans celebrated the entry of the 49ers into the NFL, along with Cleveland and Baltimore. But the road was rough and hazardous during the first year-the team won only three games against nine defeats.

1968 - Dick Nolan signs on as head coach and quickly develops an iron defence.

1970 - After a moderate roster shake-up the 49ers qualify for the first of three consecutive seasons of post season play.

1979 - Rookie Joe Montana joins the 49ers as does head coach Joe Walsh ushering in a decade of team success.

1982 - The 49ers defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 and capture the Super Bowl.

1983 -The 49ers return to the playoff's, as they continue to do for 11 of the next 12 seasons.
