Nearly one month after he claimed he had no interest in the sport, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is targeting his return to the NFL. Raiders place DT Justin Ellis on season-ending IR

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

The Oakland Raiders placed defensive tackle Justin Ellis on season-ending injured reserve with a knee injury Saturday and cut two undrafted players who had shined in the preseason as they reduced their roster to the 53-player limit. Ellis had been dealing with the injury for much of camp and never was able to get healthy enough for coach Jon Gruden to believe he could contribute this season on the defense. Ellis, a fourth-round pick in 2014, received a three-year, $13.5 million contract extension last offseason after playing 60 games his first four years as an effective run stuffer in the middle.

Seahawks down to 1 QB after cutting Geno Smith, Paxton Lynch

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

The Seattle Seahawks set their 53-man roster on Saturday without a backup quarterback to Russell Wilson after releasing both Geno Smith and Paxton Lynch to reach the league limit. It was a surprising decision after it appeared Smith had won the backup job during training camp, capped with a strong performance in the final preseason game against Oakland. Seattle has been very active in previous years making moves after cuts were announced and this year is likely to be no different, including finalizing the acquisition of Jadeveon Clowney from the Houston Texans.

Bucs acquire offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins from Steelers

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

The Tampa Buccaneers have acquired offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins and a draft pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft. The Bucs announced the move Saturday, adding the draft choice they will receive from the Steelers is a seventh-round selection in 2021. The 6-foot-6 Hawkins was a fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2016.

Broncos looking for a backup QB again

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

John Elway finds himself looking for a quarterback again after jettisoning Kevin Hogan and Brett Rypien amid plans to place second-round draft pick Drew Lock on injured reserve. ''We needed the spot,'' Elway said Saturday after trimming his banged-up roster to 52 players, one below the league maximum. With nobody behind new starting QB Joe Flacco, who directed just four drives in the preseason, Elway gazed at other teams' castoffs in search of a passer who could quickly absorb offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello's system.

NY Giants waive Lauletta, Wheeler; Smith, Simonson on IR

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

Saving the New York Giants' perfect preseason wasn't enough to keep second-year quarterback Kyle Lauletta on the roster. The Giants reached the 53-man limit Saturday with three dozen moves that included waiving Lauletta, a fourth-round draft choice last season, waiving-injured former starting right tackle Chad Wheeler and placed running back Rod Smith and tight Scott Simonson on injured reserve. If there was a surprise it was keeping veteran quarterback Alex Tanney to play behind Eli Manning and Daniel Jones, the No.

McCoy among prominent cuts as NFL teams pare rosters

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

The cruelest day of the NFL's long calendar arrived Saturday with teams setting their 53-player rosters. Among the more prominent dismissals were Bills veteran running back LeSean McCoy, backup QBs Brian Hoyer in New England and Kevin Hogan in Denver and receivers Laquon Treadwell of Minnesota, Demaryius Thomas of New England and Josh Doctson of Washington a first-round pick in 2016.

Brian Hoyer, Demaryius Thomas cut by Patriots

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

The New England Patriots released backup quarterback Brian Hoyer and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas among their moves Saturday to reach the NFL-mandated 53-player limit. Hoyer's release gives the job of backing up 20-year veteran Tom Brady to rookie Jarrett Stidham, the fourth-round draft pick out of Auburn, who played in all four preseason games. Stidham completed 61 of 90 passes in the preseason for 731 yards, with four touchdown passes and one interception.

Seahawks trim roster to 53 as Clowney trade yet to finalize

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

The Seahawks are still waiting for their acquisition of Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to be finalized as Barkevious Mingo and Jacob Martin remain on their 53-man roster for the time being following the league's 1 p.m. PT deadline to trim rosters. The league transaction wire has Clowney signing his franchise tag tender with Houston, which was a necessary step in completing the deal with the Seahawks. When the trade finally gets processed with physicals completed, Clowney will be added to the roster and Seattle will have an open roster spot.

NFL Rumors: Jakobi Meyers makes Patriots final 53-man roster

Saturday, August 31st, 2019

The NC State product developed chemistry with rookie quarterback Jarrett Stidham very early on and demonstrated some impressive consistency throughout the preseason. Meyers joins Gunner Olszewski as the team's two undrafted rookies on the roster. Bill Belichick has kept an undrafted rookie on the roster for 16 consecutive seasons now, and he has a pretty good track record of getting production out of those players, i.e.
