“I would describe it as a ‘subdued joy,’” J.J. Watt said. It was Wednesday afternoon, and the NFL superstar and his Houston Texans teammates were on a bus, finally heading back home. The Texans hadn’t been to Houston since the brutal and historic storm began. “It’s a bunch of guys who are very happy to be going home, and see their families and wives and kids,” Watt said.

Cornerback Joe Haden wished to go to a place where he felt wanted and had a chance to make the playoffs. The 28-year-old Haden joined the Steelers for their preseason game Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers, but did not play after signing a three-year, $27 million contract the day before. ''This just feels like it's going to be something special,'' Haden said with a wide smile.

The NFL Preseason has finally come to an end, giving the fantasy world exactly one solid week free of ACL injuries (hopefully) as we await the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots kicking off Week 1 next Thursday. Week 4 of the preseason was filled with illustrious quarterbacks like Dan Orlovsky, Alek Torgersen, Matt McGloin, and Kyle Sloter which left impactful fantasy developments at a minimum as teams rested their top players in anticipation of the upcoming 16-game grind. The next time we meet, there will be real, live NFL football to dissect but for now, buckle up as we highlight a few notable performances from Thursday night’s action and other news from around the NFL in Friday’s Daily Dose.

Backup QBs have big night in Giants’ 40-38 win over Pats

Thursday, August 31st, 2017

It was unclear what kind of player Geno Smith would be when he arrived with the New York Giants following a tumultuous tenure with the Jets. Aldrick Rosas hit a 48-yard field goal as time expired, Smith threw a touchdown and the New York Giants earned a 40-38 win over the New England Patriots in the final exhibition game for both teams Thursday night. Smith entered the night with the inside track to win the Giants' backup quarterback job behind Eli Manning.

Thursday, August 31st, 2017

Approaching the goal line near the end of a 13-yard run, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Hundley lowered his right shoulder into a defender and bounced across the goal line for a touchdown. If he had to do it all over again, the right-handed Hundley might have avoided contact. Hundley, the backup to Aaron Rodgers, also threw for a score to lead the Packers to a 24-10 win Thursday night over the Los Angeles Rams in the preseason finale.

Thursday, August 31st, 2017

Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback Nathan Peterman continued making his offseason-long case to secure the backup job in a preseason-ending 27-17 win over the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. Peterman played two series, which ended with Jonathan Williams scoring on a 21-yard run and Stephen Hauschka hitting a 30-yard field goal. There was additional emphasis on Peterman's performance after starter Tyrod Taylor and veteran backup T.J Yates were sidelined by concussions sustained in a 13-9 loss at Baltimore on Saturday.

NFL Preseason Blitz: Patrick Mahomes will be a lot of fun to watch

Thursday, August 31st, 2017

If the 2017 Kansas City Chiefs’ season goes as planned, Thursday night will be the last time we see quarterback Patrick Mahomes this season. In a way that’s too bad, because Mahomes might be one of the most exciting players in the NFL already. Mahomes wasn’t perfect on Thursday, but he put on a show with some great highlights.

Dak, Dez, Cowboys raise Harvey money while others practice

Thursday, August 31st, 2017

With Dak Prescott on one end of a row and Dez Bryant near the other, the stars and starters for the Dallas Cowboys answered phones to take donations for Hurricane Harvey relief while lesser-known teammates practiced a few yards away. The quarterback and his top receiver were among two dozen Dallas players on the sideline at empty 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium on Thursday night. The closed practice on the field was the replacement for a preseason game that was first relocated from flood-ravaged Houston and ultimately canceled when the Texans got the OK to go home.
