(STATS) - Feeling overlooked and undervalued has a way of fueling FCS players heading into the NFL - especially the many who go undrafted and become even longer shots. Past awards, honors and statistics don't matter, even for a player as highly decorated

Seven Carolina Panthers battles I cannot wait to see this summer

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

With the conclusion of the NFL draft this weekend, the Carolina Panthers have acquired about 95 percent of the players that will be on their roster for the season opener Sept. 10 at San Francisco. But intrigue remains. The Panthers still have a lot to decide in the next 133 days before they play a real game. Here are seven of the battles I am most anxious to watch – some of them easier to catch a glimpse of than others: Mike Shula vs. Mike Shula 2.0. The Panthers offensive coordinator caught a lot of grief last year when the team dropped from No. 1 in the NFL in scoring down to 15th. Now Shula just got a handful of new chess pieces to place on the board. Can he be creative enough to effectively

University of Kentucky wide receiver Ryan Timmons will get his shot at making an NFL roster with the Chicago Bears. The former Franklin County star tweeted the news Sunday afternoon and UK football confirmed it shortly after. Quarterback Patrick Towles, who played at Kentucky for three seasons before finishing up at Boston College as a graduate transfer, will get a tryout with Houston Texans. The Providence Journal was first with the update on Towles, and the former Highlands star confirmed it on his Twitter account. Two other ex-Cats agreed to NFL deals Saturday after Kentucky was shut out in the NFL Draft for the first time since 2007. “Big shout out and thanks to those seniors that signed

Is Kelvin Benjamin eating his way out of the Carolina Panthers’ plans?

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

Early Saturday evening in the span of about an hour, Panthers officials did and said a couple of things that signaled the complacency that seemed to settle in after the 2015 Super Bowl season won’t be tolerated. While Graham Gano’s situation is strictly production-related, Kelvin Benjamin’s involves production and pounds. Both players are coming off disappointing seasons. Gano missed eight field goals in 2016, including a 50-yard, tone-setter in the Super Bowl rematch at Denver in Week 1. Gano’s troubles continued through Week 17, when he flubbed three field goals in a 1-point loss at Tampa Bay. After the game, Panthers coach Ron Rivera hinted that he’d be bringing in competition for Gano. That

New York is the largest media market in the NFL. Everyone knows this, and it’s common knowledge that all New York athletes have performed under heavy scrutiny, for better or worse. For their part, the New York Giants brought home NFL Championships in 1927, 1934, 1938, and 1956, prior to the NFL-AFL merger, and the advent of the Super Bowl.

For the Baltimore Ravens it was all about defense in the 2017 draft

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens returned to their roots in the 2017 NFL draft. Baltimore took a defensive player with each of its first four picks, shoring up the backfield with first-round selection Marlon Humphrey before adding two linebackers and an end on Day 2. Big plays, long passes and flashy fantasy football running backs draw most of the headlines these days in the NFL, but for Baltimore it's all about defense. Humphrey was a starting cornerback for the second-ranked defense in the country. The three players selected on Friday -- Tyus Bowser of Houston, Michigan's Chris Wormley and Tim Williams of Alabama -- combined for 45 sacks over the past two seasons. "We have always been
