Fitzpatrick bids to secure Jets playoff berth in Buffalo (The Associated Press)

Thursday, December 31st, 2015
With a playoff berth on the line, New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick says he and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey don't have any time to spend reminiscing about their days in Buffalo. ''We won't sit down by a cozy fire and roast marshmallows and talk about it,'' Fitzpatrick said. Nearly three years to the day since Fitzpatrick played and Gailey coached in their final games for the Bills, they have an opportunity to make their first trip back to Buffalo a memorable one in New York's season finale Sunday.

Steelers set on staying aggressive on fourth down (The Associated Press)

Instead, head coach Mike Tomlin kept the league's second-ranked offense on the field, figuring a chance at a touchdown would take whatever juice remained in the Baltimore Ravens season and quietly snuff it out. One poorly executed running play later, Pittsburgh's fourth-and-1 turned into a first down for the Ravens. Baltimore then methodically drove 75 yards for a score, the spark that helped fuel a 20-17 upset and put the Steelers' once seemingly solid postseason hopes in serious jeopardy heading into Sunday's finale at Cleveland.

Newton, Panthers offense looks to bounce back after 1st loss (The Associated Press)

Thursday, December 31st, 2015
The Carolina Panthers may need an MVP-type performance from Cam Newton on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to secure home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs. The Panthers had the No. 1 scoring offense in the league entering last weekend after putting up at least 27 points in 12 straight games. Newton said Thursday he's anxious to get back on the field against the Buccaneers, who have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Redskins' roll saps meaning from rematch with rival Cowboys (The Associated Press)

Thursday, December 31st, 2015
The Washington Redskins haven't lost since Dallas beat them for the Cowboys' only win without Tony Romo this season. The three-game winning streak that followed helped the Redskins clinch what had been a tight NFC East race with a game to spare, rendering Sunday's rematch between the longtime rivals meaningless for the playoffs. ''I think it was a frustrating loss for us,'' said receiver DeSean Jackson, who had a critical fumble on an ill-advised punt return late in the fourth quarter of that 19-16 defeat.

Patriots embrace Winter Classic, then head to warm South (The Associated Press)

Thursday, December 31st, 2015
Bill Belichick took to the Gillette Stadium ice for a morning skate with Bruins coach Claude Julien on Thursday, then took his team to south Florida for what has become an important football game on Sunday. The Patriots need a win against the Miami Dolphins to secure the top seed in the AFC. Had they taken care of business against the New York Jets last Sunday, this week's game would have been meaningless.

Denver Broncos are now Brock Osweiler's team (The Associated Press)

Peyton Manning is a backup for the first time since replacing an injured Todd Helton on Sept. 24, 1994, during his freshman year at Tennessee. After standing on the sideline in street clothes or watching his longtime understudy on the big screen the last six weeks, Manning's left foot is healthy enough for him to play again. Coach Gary Kubiak is sticking with Osweiler as his starter even with the league's only five-time MVP available Sunday when the Broncos (11-4) host the Chargers (4-11).

Thursday, December 31st, 2015
There's no guarantee he'll have a job after Sunday, but Pettine isn't growing melancholy. Pettine said he has been given no assurances from owner Jimmy Haslam that he'll be back for a third season. Pettine is 10-21 since taking over the Browns, and just 3-17 in his last 20 games.

Coughlin sidesteps question on whether he wants to return (The Associated Press)

Thursday, December 31st, 2015
Tom Coughlin isn't saying whether he wants to return as coach of the New York Giants. The 69-year-old coach on Thursday sidestepped a direct question whether he wanted to come back for a 13th season. There has been rampant speculation about Coughlin's future in the past month as the Giants (6-9) stumbled toward the end of the season, losing five of six games.
