Blake leads Kings to victory

Rob Blake scored a rare power-play goal for Los Angeles in the third period, and Jason LaBarbera made 28 saves to lift the suddenly surging Kings to a 3-1 victory over the slumping New York Islanders on Thursday night. Blake shook off defenseman Radek Martinek in front and managed to get his stick on Dustin Browns shot, squeezing it between the pads of backup goalie Wade Dubielewicz 7:22 into the third.

Valiquette marks first shutout for Rangers

Steve Valiquette made 20 saves in his first career shutout to help the Rangers beat the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night, New Yorks first road win in more than a month. Nigel Dawes, Petr Prucha, Chris Drury and Brendan Shanahan scored for the Rangers, squashing the momentum of a Flyers team that was on a 12-2-1 streak.

Hurricanes outduel Leafs in OT

Carolina captain Rod BrindAmour scored with 1:40 left in overtime to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 win over Toronto on Thursday night. Scott Walker had a goal and assist and Tim Gleason scored for Carolina.

Richards Lightning too much for Canucks

Brad Richards had a goal and two assists, leading the Tampa Bay Lightning past the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 on Thursday night. Richards gave the Lightning a 4-2 lead on his goal from the right circle at 8:34 of the third as Tampa Bay won for just the sixth time in the past 17 games. Alexander Edlers power-play goal got the Canucks within 4-3 with 24.1 seconds left.

Ovechkin s fourth goal sinks Habs in OT

Warren Sutherland lead FBR Open

Charles Warren and Kevin Sutherland shared a one-stroke lead in front of a record opening-round crowd of 83,657 on a crisp, clear Thursday at the FBR Open. Phil Mickelson overcame a pair of early bogeys on par-5 holes and was in a group of 12 three shots back at 3-under 68 on the 7,216-yard desert layout. Brian Gay and Camilo Villegas were one shot back at 5-under 66.

Berlocq downs defending champ Horna

Carlos Berlocq defeated defending champion Luis Horna to reach the quarterfinals at the $462,000 Movistar Open, the ATPs first clay-court event of 2008. Horna beat Nicolas Massu in 2007 in straight sets. But the Argentine Berlocq turned the tables on Thursday, defeating the Peruvian Horna, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).
