WJHC Bernier to start against Sweden

Jonathan Bernier will get the start for Canada in Saturdays game against Sweden. The Los Angeles Kings netminder turned aside 44 shots in the tournament opener against the host Czech Republic as Canada opened defense of their gold medal with a shutout. The Swedes tuned up for their matchup against Canada with a 10-1 blitz of Denmark on Friday.

Molitor rings in superb year in boxing

Boxing appeared to come out of its deep slumber in Canada as Steve Molitor, the quick-fisted slugger from Sarnia, Ontario, twice defended his IBF super-bantamweight title, earning foreign fighter of the year by the British Boxing Board of Control. In Quebec, the sport continued to thrive as Montreal fighters Joachim Alcine and Lucian Bute won world titles while Jean Pascal, Adrian Diaconu and Herman Ngoudjo moved closer to the ring elite.

Pierce steals the show in Celtics win

Forget those two new guys who gave Boston its Big Three. Paul Pierce can still carry the Celtics just like the past. While most of the attention focused on Ray Allens return to Seattle, it was Pierce who took over for Boston. Pierce scored 26 of his season-high 37 points in the second half, and the Celtics held off the pesky SuperSonics 104-96 on Thursday night.

Report Cowboys re sign WR Crayton

Dallas wide receiver Patrick Crayton signed a four-year deal with the Cowboys on Thursday thats worth up to US$14 million, his agent said. Crayton will receive $6 million in guaranteed money said agent Frederick Lyles.

Flyers down Leafs to snap losing streak

DiPietro sits out against Senators

New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro sprained his left knee, but might miss only one game. DiPietro was injured during warmups Wednesday night before the Islanders faced the Toronto Maple Leafs. He lasted only one period of New Yorks 4-3 overtime victory. He underwent an MRI on Thursday and stayed in New York for treatment instead of joining the team in Ottawa for a game that night.

Yankees officially sign P Hawkins

The New York Yankees made it official Thursday, signing veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins to a one-year deal. According to Rocky Mountain News, Hawkins will make $3.75 million next season. The 35-year-old Hawkins went 2-5 with a 3.42 earned run average with five saves in 62 appearances with the NL Champion Colorado Rockies last year.
