Wild G Fernandez aggravates knee injury

Minnesota goalie Manny Fernandez aggravated his sprained left knee in Tuesdays game at St. Louis, leaving his status in doubt for the rest of the Wilds road trip. Fernandez was questionable for Thursdays game at Colorado, team spokesman Aaron Sickman said Wednesday. Niklas Backstrom would replace Fernandez if he cant play, and Josh Harding could be recalled from the minors.

Scotland Hibernian into Cup final

David Murphy and Abdessalam Benjelloun scored extra-time goals and Hibernian beat St. Johnstone 3-1 on Wednesday to reach the final of the Scottish League Cup. Steven Fletcher gave the Premier League club a third-minute lead at neutral Tynecastle only for Jason Scotland to reply for the division one side in the 76th and force the semifinal into extra time.

Arsenal meets Chelsea in Carling Cup final

Arsenal beat Tottenham 3-1 on Wednesday to edge past its north London rival and set a Carling Cup final against Chelsea. Jeremie Aliadiere and Tomas Rosicky scored in extra time to give Arsenal a 5-3 aggregate win in the semifinal, Rosickys shot going in off Spurs defender Pascal Chimbonda.

Paul returns to Hornets lineup

Reigning NBA rookie of the year Chris Paul returned to the New Orleans Hornets lineup Wednesday night after missing the previous month with a severely sprained right ankle. Coach Byron Scott said he saw Paul warming up on a television monitor when he entered the Ford Center, and Paul almost beat him to his office. Once there, Paul bounced up and down to show that his ankle was healthy.

Roger Clemens talked about his plight and laughed. Im failing at retirement, he said. Lets just face it. Im failing miserably at it. The 44-year-old right-hander, unsure whether to retire or return for a 24th major league season, was the keynote speaker for the St. Johns winter baseball banquet Wednesday night.

Bonds gives Giants right to terminate

Barry Bonds gave the San Francisco Giants the right to terminate his US$15.8 million, one-year contract if he is indicted. The unusual provision, included in the deal that was completed Monday night, protects the team in case Bonds is charged in the federal governments steroids investigation. The commissioners office, however, has rejected the initial version submitted to MLB.

Italy AS Roma reaches Italian Cup final

AS Roma advanced to its third successive Italian Cup final on Wednesday, beating AC Milan 3-1 in the second leg of the semifinals. Alessandro Mancini and Simone Perrotta both scored in the first 23 minutes and fellow midfielder David Pizarro added a tally just after halftime to send Roma through with 5-3 aggregate victory.

Thats where the Maryland Nighthawks of the American Basketball Association introduced their newest player, a man theyre touting as the tallest in the history of professional basketball.

Mets sign Sierra Williams has surgery

New York Mets pitcher Dave Williams had surgery Wednesday to repair a herniated disk in his neck and its unclear how long he could be sidelined. The team also announced that it agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Ruben Sierra and invited him to spring training, and right-hander Jason Standridge chose to become a free agent after he was designated for assignment last week.
