“Mutual agreement” between Bucs and Gerald McCoy is anything but mutual

Several years ago, multiple NFL teams tried to characterize the decision to fire a coach as a “mutual agreement to part ways.” One team is trying to apply that approach in a new context. The press release from the Buccaneers regarding the separation with defensive tackle Gerald McCoy couches the move as a mutual agreement, but it was anything but mutual. The Buccaneers cut McCoy, plain and simple.

Gerald McCoy is officially a former member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Shortly after word broke that Buccaneers would be cutting McCoy, the team announced the defensive tackle's departure. The team said the two sides “mutually parted ways” before going on to note the increased financial flexibility that comes with ending McCoy's time in Tampa that made the move an appealing option for the team.

The Gerald McCoy-Tampa Bay Buccaneers saga appears to be finally be over, as multiple outlets reported Monday that the team is releasing its six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle. McCoy, the third overall pick in 2010 NFL Draft, has three years left on his contract which called for him to make $13 million in base pay this season. After the Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud originally reported the news, ESPN's Adam Schefter noted that the Bucs tried for two months to find a trade partner, but when it was clear there was none, the two sides "mutually parted ways." The 31-year-old McCoy has been a pillar on otherwise subpar defenses for most of his career in Tampa.

These important competitions begin this week for 49ers during OTAs

Organized team activities are all about the passing games – offense and defense. Full pads are not allowed to be worn in practices during the offseason program, so the real competitions begin the third day of training camp, which opens in late-July. This week marks the first time since the end of last season that offense vs. defense competition is allowed to take place on the 49ers' practice field.

The best-case scenario was provided by coach Bruce Arians on Friday, when he met with reporters. A decision on whether Pierre-Paul will need neck surgery hasn't yet been reached.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has been released from the hospital after being involved in a car crash early Thursday in South Florida. The Buccaneers confirmed the report Thursday evening, noting that Pierre-Paul was not cited.

Buccaneers defend decision to draft another kicker

Questioned about their strategy after drafting a kicker for the second time in four years, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defended the decision. "We need to score more points," coach Bruce Arians told ESPN on Saturday after the club selected Matt Gay of Utah in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In 2016, the Buccaneers dealt third- and fourth-round picks to the Kansas City Chiefs to move up to draft Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo with the 59th overall pick.
