Jones sparkles in his start, Giants rally past Bucs 32-31

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Daniel Jones era is off to a rousing start for the New York Giants. The rookie quarterback threw for 336 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for two TDs, including the go-ahead score with 1:16 remaining as the Giants rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 32-31 on Sunday. Jameis Winston threw for 380 yards and put the Bucs (1-2) in position to pull out a dramatic win, but rookie Matt Gay's 34-yard field goal sailed wide right as time expired.

He was 5 of 7 on the go-ahead drive that covered 75 yards and ended with his 7-yard rushing score with 1:16 remaining to put the Giants up for the first time all day. Jones was the team's leading rusher with 28 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Barkley, who hurt his ankle in the second quarter when tackled awkwardly by Mike Edwards, had to be helped off the field.

A good place to start would be to find someone other than cornerback Janoris Jenkins to cover Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans. Evans has seven catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns through two quarters of Sunday's game in Tampa and the Bucs lead 28-10 on the back of that effort.

One of the differences between the Giants' new starting quarterback and their old one is that Daniel Jones can make some plays with his feet. Jones scrambled for an 11-yard gain to convert one third down and evaded pressure long enough to find Saquon Barkley for another first down later in the drive. Jones then capped off the drive by keeping the ball on a read option and running seven yards for his first NFL rushing touchdown.

Newton aggravated a left foot sprain in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has not practiced this week. The 30-year-old initially injured his foot during pre-season, forcing him to miss nearly a week of practice.
