The Chiefs placed running back Jamaal Charles on the physically unable to perform list Wednesday, though coach Andy Reid said it should not be considered a setback in his return from a knee injury. Charles tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 5 last season. This is the second time that Charles has undergone surgery to repair an ACL.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick ended a quarterback controversy before one could even begin as he said on Wednesday that Tom Brady will be the team's starter when he returns from a suspension. Belichick said the Patriots are focused on getting backup Jimmy Garoppolo ready for the team's Sept. 11 season opener but that Brady, banned four games as a result of the "Deflategate" scandal, will not lose his starting role. "We have finally some definition with Tom's situation, so our priority now then is to get Jimmy ready for the start of the season, for the Arizona game, so that'll be obviously a comprehensive process," Belichick told a news conference at Gillette Stadium.

The Los Angeles Rams released quarterback Nick Foles on Wednesday after failing to find a trade destination for the disgruntled veteran. The Rams announced the move one day before their veterans report to training camp for their homecoming season in Southern California. Foles hasn't been around the Rams since they traded up to choose California quarterback Jared Goff with the No. 1 pick in the draft this spring.

General manager Thomas Dimitroff and coach Dan Quinn already believe they have a stronger roster after an 8-8 finish in Quinn's 2015 debut. Quinn said he expects stiff competition at several positions, including right guard, linebacker and tight end.
