George Kittle brutalized Saints on clutch catch, showing 49ers can bully their way atop NFC

Sunday, December 8th, 2019

After a pre-snap motion revealed that Kittle would likely be getting man coverage from his defender, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the two receivers in front of Kittle — Emmanuel Sanders and Kendrick Bourne — ran go routes to isolate Kittle on Gardner-Johnson. Sensing an opportunity to find the sliver of daylight he needed, Kittle ran an out route — “It was a pretty easy decision for me,” he said — and ended up creating so much separation that Gardner-Johnson had to make a diving attempt to tackle him (spoiler alert: he failed). I knew the guy was in a bad situation on the other side,” Garoppolo said.

Sunday, December 8th, 2019

Jimmy Garoppolo threw four touchdown passes, and Robbie Gould kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired as the visiting San Francisco 49ers defeated the New Orleans Saints 48-46 in an NFC showdown on Sunday afternoon with major seeding ramifications. Garoppolo completed 26 of 35 passes for 349 yards and drove the 49ers 63 yards in the final minute after Drew Brees had given the Saints a one-point lead with his fifth touchdown pass of the day. On fourth-and-2 from the San Francisco 33-yard line, Garoppolo threw a 39-yard completion to George Kittle that, combined with a facemask penalty on the tackle, got Gould in range.

Another no-call for pass interference enrages Saints fans

Sunday, December 8th, 2019

After the “no-call heard 'round the world” in last season's NFC championship game arguably cost the New Orleans Saints a trip to the Super Bowl, it doesn't take much to rile up their fan base. So when Saints receiver Tre'Quan Smith was clearly being held by Tarvarius Moore — clutched is the better word — during a pass late in the third quarter of New Orleans' shootout against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, they couldn't help but expect a flag. And when it didn't come … well, you can imagine the boos that filled the Superdome while replays of the play continued to be shown on the stadium's massive dual scoreboards.

Drew Brees has four TDs in first half against 49ers, ties with Tom Brady for passing record

Sunday, December 8th, 2019

Drew Brees is having himself a game. Just halfway into the second quarter against the San Francisco 49ers, the 40-year-old New Orleans Saints QB had already notched four touchdowns. Three came from his arm — two alone were thrown to TE Jared Cook — and one was a short rushing TD from the one-yard line.

49ers inactives: Marquise Goodwin, Dante Pettis won’t play vs. Saints

Sunday, December 8th, 2019

The 49ers' receiving corps will be thin Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Marquise Goodwin (knee, foot) and Dante Pettis (knee) were among San Francisco's inactive players heading into Sunday's game in New Orleans, leaving the 49ers with just four active wide receivers for Week 14. Goodwin and Pettis were listed as questionable heading into Sunday after practicing on a limited basis Friday.

49ers’ pass rush returns to ‘fun’ style of play vs. Drew Brees, Saints

Saturday, December 7th, 2019

NEW ORLEANS – The 49ers' pass rush can once again be a factor this week. The 49ers went into their Week 13 game against the Baltimore Ravens knowing they had to make some dramatic changes with their style of getting after the quarterback. After all, they could not be so aggressive, as 49ers defensive line coach Kris Kocurek teaches, because of the running ability of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

49ers Mailbag: How will Kyle Shanahan deploy running backs vs. Saints?

Saturday, December 7th, 2019

NEW ORLEANS – It's a good problem for the 49ers to figure out who among their running backs they are going to feature. Leading rusher Matt Breida is scheduled to return to action on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints after missing three games with an ankle sprain. Raheem Mostert is coming off a 146-yard day, the best game from a 49ers running back in three years.
