Governor talks Superdome renovation, new Saints lease

Monday, August 12th, 2019

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards says the state is working on lease extensions with the New Orleans Saints designed to keep the NFL club in the Superdome for up to 30 additional years. Edwards, who attended Saints training camp on Monday, says lease talks are running in conjunction with plans for ''extensive and needed'' Superdome renovations. The Saints moved from Tulane Stadium into the state-owned Superdome in 1975 and the club's existing lease runs out in 2025.

With new offense, new digs, LSU eyes ‘special’ 2019 season

Monday, August 12th, 2019

LSU's secondary is again expected to be among the nation's best, featuring safety Grant Delpit, who led the Tigers in both sacks and interceptions last season. Justin Jefferson, who was LSU's best receiver a season ago, returns to help Burrow spearhead a spread offense designed to emulate that of the prolific New Orleans Saints - with some run-pass option mixed in. Orgeron even brought in former Saints assistant Joe Brady to work in tandem with offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger on designing and calling plays.

Quarterback Fantasy Football Busts: Brady, Brees, Mahomes among stars set to flop in 2019

Monday, August 12th, 2019

Before you call for my firing, understand that it's extraordinarily rare for a QB to repeat as position king in consecutive seasons. The last player to accomplish the feat was Drew Brees, 2011-2012. Setting an over/under at 39.5 passing TDs is entirely realistic.

New Orleans Saints settling into brand new training facility

Monday, August 12th, 2019

Not long after the sun rose over New Orleans one training-camp morning, Sean Payton was a realtor showing off the best property in his luxe inventory. His inventory: the massively refurbished Saints training facility. There's the ice box in the end zone, a remade long trailer where 20 or so players at a time can get refreshed in 32-degree chill to escape the 98-degree heat-index temps outside.

Saints release Rishard Matthews after he left team

Saturday, August 10th, 2019

The Rishard Matthews era in New Orleans didn't last long. Per Mike Triplett of ESPN.com, the Saints released the veteran wide receiver after he chose to leave camp, a day after playing in their first preseason game. “It’s not for everyone,” Payton said. The Saints signed Matthews in June. The 29-year-old Matthews asked the Titans [more]

Seahawks add J.T. Barrett, linebacker Juwon Young

Saturday, August 10th, 2019

With backup quarterback Geno Smith having surgery on Friday to remove a cyst from his knee, the Seahawks added another quarterback to the roster on Saturday. Seattle signed former New Orleans Saints quarterback J.T. Barrett and added linebacker Juwon Young to their roster. To make room on their 90-man, the team waived linebacker Chris Worley and safety Marwin Evans.

Vikings debut new offense in 34-25 preseason win over Saints

Friday, August 9th, 2019

Kirk Cousins enjoyed his first true taste of Minnesota's new offense - both from under center and watching from the sideline. Cousins was flawless in his lone series in Minnesota's new offensive scheme, backup Sean Mannion delivered a scoring pass under a heavy rush, and the Vikings defeated New Orleans 34-25 in the preseason opener for both clubs Friday night. The game marked the Vikings' first test of their new offense directed by coordinator Kevin Stefanski and influenced by adviser Gary Kubiak.

Seeking a better second Vikings season, Kirk Cousins has good preseason opener

Friday, August 9th, 2019

Kirk Cousins wasn't terrible in his first Minnesota Vikings season, but it felt that way. Cousins didn't play well against the best teams on the Vikings' schedule last season, Minnesota struggled mightily against good teams, and the 2018 season ended with an 8-7-1 record and no postseason berth. Of course Cousins, in the first year of a fully guaranteed $84 million deal, took a majority of the criticism.

Kirk Cousins sharp early for Vikings

Friday, August 9th, 2019

Do night games still count as prime time when it's summer and the days are longer? They may not, because Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is looking very good early on against the Saints, despite his 5-13 record in late games in the regular season. The Vikings took a 7-0 lead on Cousins' 1-yard pass to rookie running back Alexander Mattison, but it was the play before that should lend hope.

Lawyer suing league relieves Saints from subpoena

Friday, August 9th, 2019

A Louisiana lawyer suing the NFL over the failure to call a crucial penalty in a January playoff game said Friday he won't force the New Orleans Saints to comply with a subpoena for records regarding the game. Antonio LeMon released a letter to team officials saying he and three fellow ticket-holders suing the NFL don't want the subpoena to distract the Saints organization from the upcoming football season. ''To be clear, plaintiffs do not want to do anything or require absolutely anything of the Saints at this time that may have any negative impact and detract from the focus of the Saints in having its most successful season,'' the letter says.
