Former Oklahoma running back Mike Gaddis dies at age 50

Former University of Oklahoma running back Mike Gaddis, who former coach Barry Switzer called the best running back from the state of Oklahoma he ever signed, has died. He was 50. Switzer told The Associated Press Tuesday that Gaddis' father-in-law told him Gaddis died Monday at his home in Oklahoma City.

Specialist spots still in flux, as Vikings add kicker/punter

The Minnesota Vikings have spent the first part of training camp in an all-too-familiar search for stability with their specialists for the kicking game, an issue that has persisted over most of the time sixth-year head coach Mike Zimmer has supervised the team. For now, though, regardless of who lines up to kick and drops back to punt in the regular season and beyond, the priority for Zimmer and new special teams coordinator Marwan Maalouf over the rest of the month will be to first establish a rhythm with those ever-important snaps and holds. To make room for Vedvik, who was acquired Sunday in a trade with Baltimore, the Vikings made the long-expected move of releasing long snapper Kevin McDermott to formally hand the job to rookie Austin Cutting.

Kaare Vedvik, Baltimore’s best story of the preseason thus far, traded to Minnesota

The best story from the Ravens first preseason game has already been traded away. Kaare Vedvik, the Ravens back-up kicker and punter, was traded Sunday afternoon to the Minnesota Vikings. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the trade first, and that the compensation is a fifth-round pick.

With the Ravens set to go with Justin Tucker again at kicker, Schefter reported Sunday morning that four teams had reached out to Baltimore about Vedvik's availability. The Chicago Tribune confirmed the Bears were one of the teams involved, leaving Minnesota with an opportunity to not only upgrade its roster but keep a talented player away from a division rival. Of all the teams involved here, it's hard not to consider the Bears among the biggest losers with this development.

NFL notebook: Cardinals release DE Philon after arrest

The Arizona Cardinals released defensive end Darius Philon on Saturday, a day after he was arrested on an aggravated assault charge. Philon, 25, appeared in court on Saturday and was granted a $5,000 secured appearance bond. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for an incident that occurred in the Phoenix area in May in which he allegedly threatened to shoot a dancer outside a strip club, TMZ reported.

The Seattle Seahawks signed former Ohio State star J.T. Barrett in a depth move at quarterback on Saturday. In corresponding moves, the team waived linebacker Chris Worley and safety Marwin Evans. Seattle has Paxton Lynch and Geno Smith as backups to starting quarterback Russell Wilson, but Smith is out for at least a week because of a cyst on his knee and might not be available for the second preseason game on Aug. 18 at the Minnesota Vikings.
