With the national title game in the rearview mirror, we officially can put a bow on the 2019 college football season. For the NFL draft enthusiasts, it's a fun time over the next two months — the Senior Bowl, NFL scouting combine and college pro days will help us sharpen the picture of which prospects belong in what ranges and how NFL teams' needs will change once the free-agency period begins in March. We have enough information now to start making more accurate dart throws at our 2020 draft projections, making it an ideal time for our third mock draft for this cycle.

Lions hire special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs

The Detroit Lions have hired special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs. The team made the announcement Saturday, a week after firing special teams coordinator John Bonamego and five other members of Matt Patricia's staff. Coombs was the assistant special teams coach for the Cincinnati Bengals the previous seven years and was with the franchise for 10 seasons.

Browns fans do not seem to want Jim Schwartz

The NFL's latest round of head coaching hires is down to just one team, and it's a familiar face. The Browns are still looking for their next coach, and Wednesday the team brought in Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz for an interview. Cleveland also plans on interviewing Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels before making a decision, according to NFL Network.

Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is interviewing Wednesday with the Cleveland Browns. Schwartz is the sixth candidate to meet with the Browns, who are again looking for a head coach after another losing season. Owner Jimmy Haslam promised a “disciplined” and “thorough” search last week, and there's no reason for the Browns to rush now since they're the only NFL team still without a coach.

Lions assistants Fraley, Yates to coach offensive line

The Detroit Lions on Tuesday promoted assistant coaches Hank Fraley and Billy Yates to lead their offensive line. Fraley had been Detroit's assistant offensive line coach the previous two seasons. Yates was on Matt Patricia's coaching staff the last two years.

In other NFL coaching moves: —The Carolina Panthers have announced that Baylor's Matt Rhule has agreed to become their next head coach. Panthers owner David Tepper visited Rhule at his home in Waco, Texas, and decided he wanted him to succeed Ron Rivera, who was fired with four games remaining in the season.

The Detroit Lions have two more openings on their overhauled coaching staff. Lions coach Matt Patricia announced Thursday defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni is leaving the team to be closer to his family in Connecticut. Patricia says offensive line coach Jeff Davidson is taking an indefinite leave from the profession.

NFL draft: Lions, Bengals to coach Senior Bowl, but will their first-rounders be there?

1 and 3 overall picks in the 2020 NFL draft respectively, will be coaching the Senior Bowl teams later this month in Mobile, Alabama. The Senior Bowl is the preeminent pre-draft All-Star game, with more than 110 draft-eligible seniors (and in some cases, underclassmen who have received their degrees) going through a week's worth of practices, followed by the game on Saturday, Jan. 25. More so than the game itself, those practice sessions — including the one-on-one position drills — are considered a crucial evaluation tool for all 32 NFL teams.

Lions coach Matt Patricia fires 6 staff members

The Detroit Lions have fired special teams coordinator John Bonamego, linebackers coach Al Golden, defensive backs coach Brian Stewart, tight end coach Chris White, strength coach Harold Nash and assistant strength coach Rodney Hill. Lions coach Matt Patricia announced the moves Tuesday, two days after the franchise ended its worst season in a decade. Patricia says he will do a complete evaluation over the following days and weeks to make decisions in the best interest of the team coming off a 3-12-1 season.
