Shutdown Corner NFL Power Rankings; a changing of the guard after Week 4 (Shutdown Corner)

Monday, September 30th, 2013
Seattle's Week 4 win was impressive. To pitch a second-half shutout, come back from a 20-3 halftime deficit and beat a very good team like Houston shows the Seahawks can thrive in adverse conditions. It's hard to win a Super Bowl without winning some of those games. The Broncos are avoiding that situation by blowing everyone out. It's rare to see a NFL team steamroll through most of its schedule. The 2007 Patriots were the most dominant team of the past 20 years or so, and the Broncos have that same look through the first month. It's not easy to blow out a NFL team, and Denver has done it four times in a row. That's the reason the Broncos move up one spot to the top of the power rankings this week. The Broncos' schedule hasn't been too rough so far, but that will be a theme for them this season. Looking at the Broncos schedule , it's very easy to see them going into a game at New England on Nov. 24 still undefeated. Seattle isn't far behind Denver. If someone can get the Broncos into a competitive game, we'll see if they handle adversity as well as the Seahawks have this season. However, that moment might not happen for a while. Here are the rest of the power rankings:

Attention 49ers, Raiders fans: All eyes will be on you Sunday (Comcast SportsNet Bay Area)

Monday, September 30th, 2013
The 49ers and Texans at 5:30. The Raiders and Chargers at 8:30. But instead of saying something snarky like, “Now what could possibly go wrong with that?” let’s taken the positive view here in both venues, and tell our friends in both Oakland and San Francisco this:People all over are watching – well, the aftermath if not the games. They are expecting the very worst from you. ...

Bears rebound against New Orleans? Good luck (Comcast SportsNet Chicago)

Monday, September 30th, 2013
The Bears lost to one of the only two teams on their 2013 schedule currently with a winning record, the co-3-1 Detroit Lions. They get the other one next Sunday when the 4-0 New Orleans Saints come to Soldier Field. As if they didn’t have enough trouble keeping the Lions out of the end zone, their defensive situation just became even more dire with Drew Brees throwing for more than 400 yards in New Orleans’ win over previously undefeated Miami on Monday Night Football. ...

Saints 38, Dolphins 17 (The SportsXchange)

When Sean Payton returned this season, the Saints went from mediocre to fantastic again (Shutdown Corner)

Monday, September 30th, 2013
The 2012 and 2013 New Orleans Saints are a great test study. How much does a coach really mean to a NFL team's success? Sean Payton is giving the answer. The Saints won 13, 11 and 13 games in 2009-11, with a Super Bowl championship in that run. Then Payton got suspended for last season because of the bounty scandal, and the Saints went 7-9. Payton returned, and the Saints are 4-0 after demolishing the previously undefeated Miami Dolphins 38-17. The Saints look like one of the top three teams in the NFL right now. Maybe it's too easy to credit Payton's return for the Saints being a contender again, but what other conclusion is there to make?
