Davis takes early lead at Honda Classic

Dudley Hart spent some of Friday afternoon poised to turn The Honda Classic into a runaway. Later in the day, it was Brian Davis turn to take what seemed like a huge lead. And by nightfall, the Honda leaderboard was muddled again. Davis shot a 3-under 67 to finish the day at 8 under, one shot better than Matt Jones (67) and two shots ahead of Hart - a former South Florida resident whose last victory was at the 2000 Honda, and who peeled off six straight birdies in a 66.

Colts make offer to DT Johnson 5 others

Defensive tackle Ed Johnson, who was undrafted out of Penn State but started all 16 games as a rookie last season, received a one-year offer as an exclusive rights free agent with the Indianapolis Colts.

Agent Pats Faulk gets clean drug test

New England Patriots running back Kevin Faulk passed a drug test this week after he was cited for marijuana possession while going into a concert, his agent said Friday. Four marijuana cigarettes were found in Faulks jacket last week as the former LSU star entered the Cajundome to see rapper Lil Wayne. The citation was for simple possession, a misdemeanour, said Capt. John Babin of the Lafayette Metro Narcotics Task Force.

Broncos release LB Gold WR Walker

The Denver Broncos released linebacker Ian Gold and wide receiver Javon Walker Friday. Gold, a ninth-year player, spent seven seasons with the Broncos and appeared in 99 games (67 starts) with the club, totaling 542 tackles and 16 1/2 sacks. Walker, a seventh-year player, was with the Broncos for the last two seasons after he was acquired in a trade from Green Bay in April of 2006.

Eagles ink CB Samuel to six year deal

The Eagles have signed free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel. The team has agreed to a six-year contract with Samuel, who spent the last five seasons with New England and had 16 interceptions the last two years. Samuel also tied the NFL career playoff record with three interceptions returned for touchdowns. Philadelphia had only 11 interceptions last year and failed to score a defensive touchdown. Its defence had an NFL-worst 19 takeaways.

Vikes woo Berrian add Tapeh Williams

The Minnesota Vikings are already active in free agency, agreeing to terms with fullback Thomas Tapeh and safety Madieu Williams. Wide receiver Bernard Berrian is also coming for a visit. Berrian would be a boost for a position of need if the Vikings are able to sign him. He had 71 catches for 951 yards and five touchdowns for division rival Chicago last season, his fourth in the NFL.

Jaguars sign WR Porter

The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired their second wide receiver of the day Friday, inking former Raiders pass-catcher Jerry Porter. Porter, 29, had 44 catches for 705 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games last season for Oakland. Originally a second-round pick from West Virginia in 2000, Porter has 284 receptions for 3,939 yards and 30 touchdowns in eight seasons with the Raiders.

Bruschi re signs with Patriots

The New England Patriots re-signed linebacker Tedy Bruschi on Friday, also agreed to deals with long snapper Lonie Paxton and wide receiver Kelley Washington and released tight end Kyle Brady. Bruschi will enter his 13th season with the Patriots next season since being selected in the third round of the 1996 draft. He led the team in tackles the last two seasons, and for his career has 1,063 tackles, 30.5 sacks and 12 interceptions.
