Giants agree to deal Benitez to Marlins

The San Francisco Giants agreed to trade struggling closer Armando Benitez to the Florida Marlins for reliever Randy Messenger on Thursday night. Neither team made an official announcement. Asked whether Benitez had been sent to the Marlins, agent Mike Powers said, Its a done deal.

Fielder goes deep again in Brewers win

Prince Fielder hit his league-leading 19th homer, J.J. Hardy drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Florida Marlins 4-3 on Thursday night. Corey Hart doubled with two outs in the eighth and Hardy followed with a single off Matt Lindstrom (0-2) for his team-leading 46th RBI.

Amelie Mauresmo watched her opponents final shot fly astray, then exhaled. Its still a struggle at the French Open, even now that shes a two-time Grand Slam champion. I felt tight, Mauresmo acknowledged Thursday after almost letting the match slip away before beating another Frenchwoman, Nathalie Dechy, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-1 to reach the third round at Roland Garros.

Report Suns to hire Steve Kerr as GM

Steve Kerr will be named general manager of the Phoenix Suns, a person with knowledge of the hiring said Friday. Kerr cant officially take the job until he completes his obligations as an analyst for TNT during the NBA playoffs. He is expected to be introduced at a news conference next week, said a person close to the situation who asked not to be identified because the official announcement had not been made.

Florida s Donovan to coach Magic

Rich history wasnt enough to lure Billy Donovan away from Florida. In the end, it was just riches. Donovan will have plenty of them after he was hired to coach the Orlando Magic on Thursday. Donovan agreed to a deal worth US$5.5 million a year for five years, an official in the NBA told The Associated Press.

Jays blank White Sox in Halladay s return

Roy Halladay continues to find new and more impressive ways to amaze. Just 19 days removed from an appendectomy, the Toronto Blue Jays ace completely dominated the Chicago White Sox for seven innings and rode solo shots from Aaron Hill and Frank Thomas to a 2-0 victory Thursday night. Halladay (5-2) allowed just six hits and struck out seven to pick up the 100th career win in a tidy one hour 50 minutes.

El Duque and Mets topple Giants

Orlando Hernandez gave up two quick hits and little else over seven impressive innings, and the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2 Thursday night for their fifth win in six games.

Lions linebacker Carl Kidd retires

Former BC Lions linebacker Carl Kidd has officially retired. Kidd played seven seasons for the Lions and was part of Grey Cup championships in 2000 and 2006. The vocal and talented Arkansas-grad led the CFL in special teams tackles in 2006 with 24 and added 39 defensive tackles and two pass knockdowns.

Senators hope home ice can cure ills

After a miserable two games in Anaheim, the Ottawa Senators are glad to be home. Most of the team was on the ice for a short skate at Scotiabank Place on Thursday night after a day-long flight from Southern California, where they dropped a pair of one-goal decisions to the Anaheim Ducks in the opening two games of the Stanley Cup final.
