Giants deal Benitez to Marlins

The San Francisco Giants agreed to trade struggling closer Armando Benitez to the Florida Marlins for reliever Randy Messenger on Thursday night. Neither team made an official announcement. Asked whether Benitez had been sent to the Marlins, agent Mike Powers said, Its a done deal.

Ducks arrive in Ottawa for Games 3 and 4

The Anaheim Ducks have no interest in checking out the parties along Sens Mile or shopping for souvenirs at the Rideau Centre. The only thing they want to do in Ottawa is win hockey games. Coach Randy Carlyle wants his team to have some peace and quiet before playing Game 3 at Scotiabank Place on Saturday night. We can sacrifice our interaction with the public (to focus) on the task at hand, he said. Its not too many times you get an opportunity to play in the Stanley Cup final.

LeBron carries Cavs to cusp of finals

LeBron James lifted the Cleveland Cavaliers within a win of the NBA final for the first time in franchise history. James scored a career playoff-high 48 points - including 29 of his teams final 30 - to give Cleveland a 109-107 double-overtime victory Thursday night over the Detroit Pistons and a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference finals.

Padres down Pirates with 11th inning homer

Mike Cameron hit a go-ahead homer in the 11th inning after tying it with a run-scoring double in the ninth, and the San Diego Padres overcame a disputed call taking away a home run in a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night. The Padres rallied from a two-run deficit and won despite a dominating outing by Pirates starter Shawn Chacon, who shut them out on three hits over seven innings.

Pujols less Cardinals down Rockies

Hafner and Indians trounce Tigers

Travis Hafner homered and drove in four runs, Victor Martinez finished with three RBIs and the Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers 11-5 Thursday night. Cleveland improved baseballs best home mark to 18-4 despite a rough outing by ace C.C. Sabathia (8-1), who allowed five runs and 10 hits in 7 1-3 innings. Sabathia, 5-0 at Jacobs Field, moved into a tie for the major league lead in wins.
