Sheffield s blast leads Tigers past O s

Gary Sheffield homered off Daniel Cabrera two innings after the Baltimore starter hit him with a pitch, leading the Detroit Tigers to an 8-4 victory over the Orioles on Monday night. Cabrera hit Sheffield in the third inning, and the pair had to be pulled apart during a bench-clearing incident in the fifth before Sheffield got the last word with a homer estimated at 408 feet. Sheffield watched the drive sail into the left-field stands from home plate before he slowly trotted around the bases.

Lopez deal has unusual incentives

Jose Lopezs new, $6.07 million, four-year contract with the Seattle Mariners, a deal that could net him almost $13.7 million over five seasons, comes with watchful eyes attached. Lopezs agreement includes a $4.5 million club option for 2011 with a $250,000 buyout and has escalators that will raise his salaries if he is arbitration-eligible after this year, which is likely if he stays in the major leagues the entire season.

Halladay goes the distance in Jays win

Through injuries and adversity, the Toronto Blue Jays managed to finish April with a winning record. Another outstanding outing by ace Roy Halladay led them to a 6-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday night and helped them finish the seasons opening month at 13-12.

Bay s fourth homer leads Pirates to win

Jason Bay hit a one-out homer in the eighth, an inning after Pittsburgh tied it on Ronny Paulinos double, and the Pirates came back from a two-run deficit to beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 Monday night. Bays homer, an opposite-field shot off Michael Wuertz (0-1) that barely reached the right-field bleachers, was his fourth of the season and his 100th with the Pirates. Bay, a Trail, B.C., native, is the 20th player in club history to hit that many.

Hudson honours Hancock in Braves victory

Tim Hudson honoured college teammate Josh Hancock with another strong outing and Andruw Jones won it for the Braves with a three-run homer in the ninth inning, giving Atlanta a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night.
