Raptors roll over Rockets

Andrea Bargnani scored 20 points, and the Toronto Raptors used a torrid shooting first half to build a 20-point lead and beat the Houston Rockets 106-90 on Wednesday night. T.J. Ford and Kris Humphries added 16 points apiece for the Raptors, who have won 10 of 13.

Bulls run wild on Warriors

Ben Gordon scored 16 of his 22 points in the first quarter and rookie Tyrus Thomas tied a career high with 14 points to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 113-83 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night. Reserve Adrian Griffin added a season-high 17 points and rookie Thabo Sefolosha scored a career-high 19 points for the Bulls, who bounced back after dropping consecutive games.

Despite missing playoffs Esks made money

Missing the CFL playoffs for the first time in 35 years didnt hurt the Edmonton Eskimos bottom line. The CFL team announced at its annual general meeting Wednesday that it posted a profit of $153,534 last season. Edmonton finished last in the West Division standings in 2006 with a 7-11-0 record.

Senators sweep home and home vs Canes

Jason Spezza scored a goal and had an assist and Ray Emery stopped 27 shots Wednesday as the Ottawa Senators defeated Carolina 2-0 and beat the Hurricanes for the second consecutive night. Spezza helped set up Dany Heatley in the first period, then added a third-period insurance goal as the Senators (38-22-4) won their third straight game and eighth in their past nine contests before a crowd of 19,261 at sold-out Scotiabank Place. Ottawa swept the home and home series with the Hurricanes, winning 4-2 in Carolina on Tuesday.

Bears sign Smith to contract extension

The Chicago Bears Wednesday signed coach Lovie Smith to a four-year contract extension through the 2011 season, and extended general manager Jerry Angelos contract through the 2013 season. The 2005 NFL coach of the year, Smith led the Bears to a 15-4 record and their first NFC championship since 1985. Chicago lost to Indianapolis, 29-17, in Super Bowl XLI.

Sixers pull off impressive win over Suns

Andre Iguodala scored 24 points, Willie Green had 20 and the Philadelphia 76ers never trailed Wednesday night in a 99-94 win over the Phoenix Suns, who lost on the road to an Eastern Conference team for the first time. The Suns won their first 14 on the road against East teams and failed in their bid to become the first team to sweep its road games against the opposite conference. It was also the first time the Suns failed to even hold a lead.

Shaq leads Heat to victory over Wizards

Shaquille ONeal took over the game in the fourth quarter, assuming command of the paint by scoring 10 of his season-high 23 points to lead the Miami Heat to a 92-83 victory Wednesday night over the Washington Wizards. ONeal became the unstoppable star when it mattered most. He scored all 12 of Miamis points over a 13-minute span, using a variety of moves against helpless Wizards center Brendan Haywood.

Celtics knock Knicks around

Gerald Green scored 10 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, including seven straight after Boston had finished blowing a 23-point lead, helping the Celtics beat the New York Knicks 102-94 on Wednesday night. Al Jefferson had 26 points and nine rebounds and Paul Pierce added 24 points for the Celtics, who have won two in a row for the first time since winning five straight Dec. 9-16. After that, they lost 25 of 27 games, including 18 straight losses that set a franchise record and made a run at the NBA mark of 24.

Verdasco advances to Vegas finals

Fernando Verdasco of Spain advanced to the quarter-finals of the Tennis Channel Open with a three set victory over Thailands Danai Udomchoke during round-robin play Wednesday. The fifth-seeded Verdasco had four double faults while losing the second set, and then took advantage of Udomchokes four double faults in the third.

Champ Car clears schedule for month of May

The Champ Car World Series is once again tinkering with its 2007 schedule. There are reports that the inaugural race in China, scheduled for May, will now be pushed to October in order to give organizers more time to prepare the facilities. The Belgian race is also being expected to be moved ahead one week in August.
