Figgins leads Angels over Athletics

Chone Figgins, batting fourth for the first time in his career, drove in the tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth inning with a bases-loaded single and Francisco Rodriguez set a club record with his major league-leading 47th save as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Oakland Athletics 7-6 Saturday night.

Ray scores winner as Esks defeat Riders

Ricky Ray ran eight yards for the winning touchdown with 42 seconds remaining as the Edmonton Eskimos defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 30-25 Saturday night. The result restored some hope to the Eskimos flagging playoff hopes. Edmonton (5-9) would have been closer to the end of its 34-year run of post-season qualification with a loss. Saskatchewan (7-7) remains third in the West Division.

Torres scores OT winner for Oilers

Raffi Torres scored on an overtime power play Saturday night to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in the final NHL pre-season game for both teams. The Oilers enjoyed a 4-on-3 advantage after Vancouver winger Matt Cooke took a costly double minor at the end of the third period.

Svatos scores shootout win for Avs

Marek Svatos scored one of Colorados three first-period goals and had the lone goal in a shootout to give the Avalanche a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night in the final exhibition game for both teams. Milan Hejduk and Tyler Arnason also scored for the Avalanche (5-1). Jose Theodore stopped 28 shots also made saves on shots by Alexander Frolov, Michael Cammalleri and Lauri Tukonen in the shootout.

Cazares beats Dieppa in rematch

Mexican Hugo Cazares defeated Nelson Dieppa by technical knockout in the 10th round for his fourth successful defence of the WBO light flyweight title Saturday at Hector Sola Bezares Coliseum. In a title fight rematch, Cazares dropped Dieppa in the second round and caused bleeding above his right ear. Dieppas face began to puff up as he stepped away from his corner to start the third round.

Report Grimsley accuses Clemens others

Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Miguel Tejada were among the players that Jason Grimsley accused of using performance-enhancing drugs, according to a federal agents affidavit, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday on its website. The agent for Clemens and Pettitte denied the accusations. Baltimore teammates Brian Roberts, Jay Gibbons and Tejada also were implicated in the sworn statement, the Times said; an Orioles spokeswoman said the team had not seen the report and had no comment.

Tigers miss chance to clinch AL Central

Playoff-bound Detroit missed a chance to clinch the AL Central when David DeJesus hit a two-run triple in Kansas Citys seven-run first inning, leading the Royals to a 9-6 victory over the Tigers on Saturday night. Detroit would have clinched the division with a win after the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 6-3 earlier in the day, cutting the Tigers magic number to one.

Timonen sets up three in Predators win

Defenceman Kimmo Timonen set up three power-play goals in a 3:19 span to help the Nashville Predators beat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-1 on Saturday night in the final exhibition game for both teams. Tomas Vokoun made 25 saves to finish the pre-season 3-0. Scott Hartnell began the power-play streak with 2 seconds left in the first period, Steve Sullivan scored 37 seconds into the second and David Legwand capped the surge 2:40 later. Hartnell and Sullivan scored on 4-on-3 advantages.

Captain Morrow gives Stars OT win

New Dallas captain Brenden Morrow scored with a second left in overtime to give the Stars a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night in the final exhibition game for both teams. Morrow, who took over the captaincy from Mike Modano on Friday, won the game off an assist from Modano after the former captain tied it with 6:12 left in regulation.
