Mariners surge past Orioles

Richie Sexson and Kenji Johjima homered, Yuniesky Betancourt and Jose Lopez each had three hits, and the Seattle Mariners used a late scoring surge to beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-5 on Monday night. The Mariners trailed 3-0 before scoring all their runs in the final four innings. Sexson and Johjima connected against Eddy Rodriguez in a four-run eighth that made it 9-4 and all but assured Seattle its seventh win in nine games.

Browns Tucker McCutcheon to have surgery

Cornerback Daylon McCutcheon and right offensive tackle Ryan Tucker, two of Clevelands steadiest players the past few seasons, will both undergo knee surgery in hopes of being ready for the season opener. McCutcheon, the only player left from the clubs 1999 draft class, will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday.

Bush hustling into Saints camp

With his contract done more than a week before he expected, Reggie Bush scrambled to get to the New Orleans Saints training camp Monday evening. Bushs deal, agreed to in principle Saturday night, is worth up to $62 million US over six years, with a little more than $26.3 million guaranteed.

Varitek leaves Sox game with knee injury

Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek left Monday nights game in the third inning with a twisted left knee and will be re-evaluated Tuesday. The club gave no indication of how long he would be sidelined.

Twins activate Torii Hunter from DL

Centre-fielder Torii Hunter was back in the Minnesota lineup Monday night after being activated from the 15-day disabled list before the Twins game against the Texas Rangers. Earlier in the day, the Twins traded right-hander Kyle Lohse to the Cincinnati Reds for minor league right-hander Zach Ward.

Utley extends hit streak in Phillies loss

Chase Utley extended his hitting streak. That was just about the only positive the Philadelphia Phillies could take away from their Monday matinee against the Florida Marlins. Rookie Josh Johnson was sharp on the mound and drove in a pair of runs as the Marlins battered Jon Lieber and the Phillies, 15-2, in the finale of a rare five-game series.

Devil Rays deal Lugo to Dodgers

After adding the Greg Maddux, the Los Angeles Dodgers added some offence. The Dodgers added shortstop Julio Lugo from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers.

Moodie moves on at Legg Mason Classic

Wesley Moodie rebounded after losing the first set and beat California teenager Sam Querrey 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6), in the opening round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Monday. The six-foot-six Querrey dominated his South African opponent with 19 aces in the first set, winning 82 per cent of his first-serve points.

Safina ousted by Suarez at Acura Classic
