The annual showcase is going to be one big outdoor game when the Dallas Stars host the Nashville Predators at the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium on Wednesday - even without ''Big Tex'' booming out the customary ''Howdy, folks!'' that visitors to the State Fair of Texas hear each fall. More than 84,000 fans are expected for the NHL's 12th New Year's Day game, this one at the stadium where the boots belonging to the fair's iconic 55-foot talking cowboy will be near the rink with an oversized, ranch-style entry arch.

Flames score 3 power-play goals, beat Stars 5-1

Matthew Tkachuk, Sean Monahan and Mikael Backlund scored power-play goals and the Calgary Flames beat the Dallas Stars 5-1 on Sunday night. Tkachuk's 14th goal of the season broke a 1-1 tie in the second period. Monahan also scored in the second.

Stars-Predators, Avalanche-Kings complete ’19-20 NHL outdoor schedule

The NHL finalized its outdoor scheduled for the 2019-20 season on Friday afternoon when commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the Dallas Stars will be hosting the Nashville Predators in the 2020 Winter Classic at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. We had known for several weeks now that the Stars would be hosting the event for the first time at the iconic college football venue, but their opponent was a mystery until Friday. This will be the first outdoor game for both franchises.
