Chargers drafted Dan Feeney at 71, Patriots wanted him at 72

Sunday, May 14th, 2017

The Chargers got the man they wanted in the third round of the NFL draft, and not a pick too soon. Dan Feeney, a guard/center from Indiana, went to Los Angeles with the 71st overall pick in the draft. According to Mike Reiss of ESPN, the Patriots were set to take Feeney with the 72nd overall pick. With Feeney off the board, the Patriots traded down, sending the 72nd pick to Tennessee for the 83rd and 124th overall picks. Reiss notes that one of the Patriots’ first priorities after the draft was giving center David Andrews a contract extension. If the Patriots had been able to draft Feeney, they might not have extended Andrews. So the Chargers’ selection was bad for the Patriots, but good for

Chargers receiver Williams pleased to have contract done

Friday, May 12th, 2017

Los Angeles Chargers rookie receiver Mike Williams is ready for a drama-free summer. ''That was real important,'' said Williams, the seventh pick overall. Williams is represented by the same agency that represents defensive end Joey Bosa, who missed all of training camp last year in a nasty squabble over offset language and signing bonus payments.

No drama for Chargers this year; Mike Williams signs

Thursday, May 11th, 2017

The Chargers were the last team in the NFL to sign their first-round pick in 2016, but someone else will take the crown in 2017. The Chargers announced that wide receiver Mike Williams, who went seventh overall, has agreed to a contract with the team. Williams’ deal is for four years, with a team option for a fifth, and Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports he’ll make about $19.75 million with all of the money guaranteed. The Chargers didn’t sign 2016 first-round pick Joey Bosa until late August after extended haggling over offsets and the size and structure of the defensive end’s signing bonus. Bosa and Williams are both represented by CAA, but things went a lot smoother this time than last. Williams

Anthony Lynn: Philip Rivers looks rejuvenated

Thursday, May 4th, 2017

After the draft passed without the Chargers taking a quarterback who they would groom as a potential successor to Philip Rivers, Rivers said that he was happy the team made moves that would help the team win right now. The Chargers discussed the possibility of adding a young quarterback several times leading up to the draft and coach Anthony Lynn said on “The Jim Rome Show” that they considered one, but that there wasn’t one high enough on their board to avoid reaching. He also said that Rivers has shown them he can “continue to play at a high level.” Adding wide receiver Mike Williams and guard Forrest Lamp with their first two picks should help the Chargers put Rivers in position to put up

Ex-Chargers fan hopes to put his frustration on display in Los Angeles

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While the San Diego Chargers are now a team of the past, many fans are still struggling to let go. To cope, one San Diegan is planning to make a lot of noise in Los Angeles next season, without saying anything at all. Joseph MacRae started a Go Fund Me page, raising money to purchase three billboards near the StubHub Center in LA. One billboard will be anti-Dean Spanos and his sons. The other two will target the National Football League.  "This whole thing is a breakup. I'm not the only one dealing with this," said MacRae. "People in St. Louis who lost the Rams, people in Oakland who are losing the Raiders,  they understand where I'm coming from." MacRae has hired a graphic

Who will replace Philip Rivers as Chargers quarterback?

Monday, May 1st, 2017

One of the winners in the 2017 NFL draft? Philip Rivers. One of the potential losers? His team, the San Diego — sorry, Los Angeles — Chargers. We here at Shutdown Corner deemed Rivers a winner because of the supporting cast the Chargers added for him,

Clemson wideout Artavis Scott among Chargers undrafted additions

Sunday, April 30th, 2017

The Chargers started their draft by selecting Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams and they ensured he’ll have a familiar face in the position group by agreeing to terms with one of his college teammates. Wide receiver Artavis Scott is one of the 15 players who will be joining the Chargers as undrafted free agents. Scott had 76 catches for 614 yards and five touchdowns last season, but joins a deep group with Williams, Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams, Travis Benjamin and Dontrelle Inman on the depth chart. The Chargers were bandied about as a landing spot for a quarterback in the draft, but the only addition at that position came when they agreed to terms with Jacksonville State’s Eli Jenkins. Jenkins

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Shortly following the conclusion of the 2017 National Football League Draft on Saturday, former Jacksonville State quarterback Eli Jenkins announced he had signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. Jenkins, a 6-foot-2 quarterback from Birmingham, joins the newly-branded Golden State squad as the fourth signal caller on roster. He is set to be reunited with former Gamecock linebacker Chris Landrum who is entering his second professional season. Landrum was signed by the Chargers in May 2016. Jenkins earned All-America honors in three seasons as JSU's quarterback, including First Team honors in both his junior and senior seasons. He never saw his team

Rivers, Gordon should benefit from Chargers’ draft picks

Saturday, April 29th, 2017

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Philip Rivers should be stoked about the Los Angeles Chargers' draft. Melvin Gordon, too. Dan Feeney certainly is. He's one of two offensive linemen who joined the Chargers in the draft and one of three offensive players taken with the

NFL: Bengals take chance on Mixon as running backs fly off board

Friday, April 28th, 2017

The most controversial player in the 2017 NFL Draft came off the board on day two as Joe Mixon was taken by the Cincinnati Bengals. Mixon had been considered undraftable by some teams in the league after a video emerged of him striking a woman in a 2014
