Sabres, Flyers moving on after trades

The new-look Philadelphia Flyers will search for their second straight win when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. Just minutes before Monday's 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, the Flyers dealt winger Wayne Simmonds to the Nashville Predators for Ryan Hartman and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2020. Simmonds had 16 goals and 11 assists in 62 games with the Flyers this season.

Giroux scores OT winner as Flyers rally past Penguins

Claude Giroux scored the game winner 1:59 into overtime to cap a wild third period comeback as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in an NHL outdoor game on Saturday. Giroux, who has spent his entire career with Philadelphia, was playing in his 800th NHL game and he made sure there was a celebration at the end in front of the crowd of 69,600 at Lincoln Financial Field. The Flyers' captain went one on one with Pittsburgh defenceman Justin Schultz, balanced on one skate, and then shifted to the right and threaded a low shot between the legs of Penguins goaltender Matt Murray.

Sometimes creating a sports team’s mascot is easy: Rowdy, the Dallas Cowboys cowboy or Benny, the Chicago Bulls bull, for instance. Philadelphia, however, has had to think outside the box for some of its teams. Other than the Eagles, pro-sports organizations with names like the 76ers, the Phillies, and the Flyers don’t necessarily have a built-in anthropomorphic animal or caricatured humanoid to fit the bill.
