Back in September, President Donald Trump “withdrew” an invitation for the NBA champion Golden State Warriors to visit the White House after multiple members of the team made it clear that they didn’t want to attend, due to their opposition to the way Trump conducted his presidential campaign and the policies he’s espoused in office. Two days after the NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles were similarly “disinvited” over similar player concerns, Warriors coach Steve Kerr praised those who demonstrate their love of country through actual deeds rather than empty gestures.

Mayor Jim Kenney made his accusation in defense of the Philadelphia Eagles, who were originally scheduled to celebrate their Super Bowl victory at the White House with President Donald Trump on Tuesday. The president abruptly called off the event after fewer than 10 players, according to the White House, planned to attend, but Trump also cited his affront to NFL players kneeling in protest during the playing of the national anthem before games.

Fox News had tweeted the same statement, from Bream’s executive producer Christopher Wallace, hours earlier. When some players pushed back, noting team members were praying in the images and no player took a knee during the season, Trump shot back that taking to the locker room during the national anthem doesn’t count either.
