Paul leads Hornets past Kings

Chris Paul and the rest of the Hornets starting five got their teams full-time return to New Orleans off to a promising start. Paul had 22 points and 12 assists, while Peja Stojakovic showed some of his all-star form of old with 19 points to help the Hornets beat the Sacramento Kings 104-90 on Wednesday night.

Flames enjoying early season success

Previously known for their defensive prowess, the Calgary Flames are winning more by scoring goals than keeping the puck out of their own net. Calgary is coming off its best October since the lockout with a 6-3-3 record, which has the Flames chasing Minnesota for the Northwest Division lead. The Flames scored 17 more goals than they did last October playing just two more games in that month this year.

Panthers double up on Hurricanes

Richard Zednik scored the go-ahead goal and the Florida Panthers scored four times in the final period to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 on Wednesday night. Trailing 1-0 coming into the final period, the Panthers scored three goals in a 5:12 stretch. It started when Florida tied the score at 2 with 5:49 remaining on Bouwmeesters first goal of the season. Bouwmeesters shot from the top of the left circle got past Ward.

Modano ties mark for points by American

Dallas Stars centre Mike Modano matched Phil Housley for the most points by an American-born NHL player, earning his 1,232nd point Wednesday night with an assist on Sergei Zubovs power-play goal against Chicago. Modano, already the U.S. goal leader with 509, set up Zubovs goal at 10:07 of the third on a 5-on-3 advantage. The 37-year-old Michigan native has two goals and four assists in the first 12 games this season.

NBA suspends Lakers owner for two games

Lakers owner Jerry Buss has been suspended for two games and fined US$25,000 by NBA commissioner David Stern in conjunction with Buss conviction on a misdemeanour drunk driving charge. Buss was not at Staples Center when the Lakers opened their season with a 95-93 loss to the Houston Rockets on Tuesday. He will finish the suspension by missing Los Angeles game in Phoenix on Friday night.

Dalembert has no regrets playing for Canada

Competing for Canada this past summer came at a cost for Samuel Dalembert. But the Montreal native said it was well worth it. Dalembert missed all but one game of the NBA pre-season, sidelined with a stress fracture to his left foot after competing for Canada at the FIBA Americas Olympic qualifying tournament in Las Vegas.

Magic win home opener against Bucks

Rashard Lewis scored 26 points and Hedo Turkoglu had 24 to lift the sharp-shooting Orlando Magic to a 102-83 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in the teams season opener Wednesday night. Behind Turkoglu and Lewis, making his Eastern Conference debut, the Magic buried Milwaukee from behind the arc. Orlando was 12-of-22, compared with 4-of-17 for the Bucks. Lewis was 4-of-5 and Turkoglu 3-for-5.

Raptors open season with win over 76ers

Andrea Bargnani scored 20 points as the Toronto Raptors began their quest for another Atlantic Division title Wednesday with a 106-97 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. T.J. Ford had 14 points and 12 assists in the NBA season-opener for both teams. Chris Bosh had 16 points, and Anthony Parker and Jose Calderon finished with 13 apiece. With Bargnani leading the way, the Raptors showed off their offensive prowess, shooting 49 per cent.

Devils earn first home win at new arena

Jay Pandolfo scored three goals to lead New Jersey to a 6-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night, giving the Devils their first victory at the Prudential Center. Martin Brodeur, playing in his 900th game, made 21 saves as New Jersey halted a four-game losing streak.

Chelsea Arsenal reach League Cup quarters

Frank Lampard scored his third goal in injury time to give defending champion Chelsea a 4-3 victory over Leicester in the League Cup Wednesday, while Arsenal also moved into the quarter-finals of Englands second-tier cup competition with a 3-0 win at Sheffield United. Chelsea trailed twice against Leicester, but Andriy Shevchenko and Lampard both scored in the last three minutes for the victory.
