Streaking Phils maul Marlins

Chase Utley went 2-for-3 with three RBI, as the Philadelphia Phillies remained hot with a 9-2 win over the Florida Marlins in the start of a three-game series at Dolphin Stadium. Pat Burrell knocked in a pair of runs while Jimmy Rollins scored twice and drove in one for the Phillies, who are coming off a big four-game sweep of the Mets and have won six in a row overall. They remain two games behind New York after the Mets beat Atlanta on Friday.

Sonnanstine leads D Rays over Yankees

Rookie Andy Sonnanstine pitched a career-high eight innings and Carlos Pena hit two home runs as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays crushed the New York Yankees, 9-1, in the opener of a three-game set.

Ankiel slam lifts Cardinals over Reds

Rick Ankiel added another chapter to his improbable comeback story, belting a grand slam to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the Cincinnati Reds, 8-5, in the opener of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. The pitcher-turned-slugger now has five homers and 14 RBI in just 17 games for the Cardinals, who moved to within two games of the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central lead. Yadier Molina hit a two-run homer.

Markakis and Orioles hold off Red Sox

Nick Markakis went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer as the Orioles held off a late Red Sox charge to snap a nine-game losing streak with a 9-8 victory in the opener of a three-game weekend series at Fenway Park. Kurt Birkins (1-1) got the win in three innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits after spelling starter Radhames Liz. Liz lasted just three-plus innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, striking out three and walking three.

Gallardo does it all in Brewers win

Yovani Gallardo tossed seven innings of five- hit ball and hit a solo home run that proved to be the difference as the Milwaukee Brewers took the first game of their weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2, at Miller Park. Gallardo (6-4) struck out seven and walked just one in allowing two runs.

Bengals victorious over Colts

Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer were spectators for a pre-season game that was tough to watch from the sideline - or anywhere else. Neither of the NFLs Pro Bowl passers got onto the field Friday night, leaving it to the reserves to generate some points and excitement. Neither came easily during the Cincinnati Bengals 14-6 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Falcons ease past Ravens

In a pre-season finale nearly devoid of star power, Willis McGahee was a surprise starter for the Baltimore Ravens on Friday night. Not even a US$40 million running back could stir much excitement at the Georgia Dome. McGahee was one of the few players with name recognition to play in a game decided by second-string kickers. Atlanta won 13-10 when Matt Prater, in just his second day with the Falcons, kicked two fourth-quarter field goals.

Rodney Harrison admits to using HGH

The NFL will suspend New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison four games for violating its substance abuse policy, Harrison said Friday night. The suspension was first reported by ESPN.com, which said Harrison admitted to federal investigators that he obtained human growth hormone. Harrison confirmed the suspension in a conference call with reporters, but would not confirm the details.

Jays defeat reeling Mariners

Royals Twins split day night doubleheader

Friday, August 31st, 2007
Scott Baker had a perfect game and no-hit bid foiled in the ninth inning, as Minnesota blanked the Kansas City Royals, 5-0, earning the split in a day-night doubleheader at the Metrodome. Baker (8-6) had a chance at becoming the 18th pitcher in Major League history to toss a perfect game, but walked John Buck to open the ninth. Buck was erased on Esteban Germans ground ball to second, but Mike Sweeney, just off the 60-day disabled list for Kansas City, lofted a short fly ball that found open space in left field.
