Red hot Beltran blasts Mets to victory

Carlos Beltran homered twice for the second straight game, leading the New York Mets to an 8-3 victory over the free-falling Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Paul Lo Duca and David Wright also connected, and Jorge Sosa pitched five effective innings before he left after straining his left hamstring running to first base in the sixth.

Twins win home run derby vs Tigers

Michael Cuddyer and Lew Ford homered and drove in three runs apiece to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 8-5 Saturday. Cuddyer hit a three-run homer, went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Ford hit a two-run drive and a run-scoring double.

Patterson to get treatment in Canada

Washington Nationals right-hander John Patterson, out for nearly two months with a slow-to-heal nerve injury in his right elbow, is seeking treatment on his own in Toronto that apparently isnt approved in the United States.

Nielsen s takes Commerce Bank lead

Lonnie Nielsen fired a seven-under 64 on Saturday to move into the lead after two rounds of the Commerce Bank Championship. He finished 36 holes at 12-under-par 130, which was two off Jim Thorpes tournament record, and is three clear of Tom McKnight, who shot a second-round 66 at the Red Course at Eisenhower Park.

Paralyzed gymnast s Olympic spirit shines

Sang Lan raised her arms shoulder high, the gestures growing more animated as she talked about next years 2008 Olympics. She carried the torch three years ago for the Athens Games. It could be even more stirring doing it at home next year, part of a journey that will take the Olympic flame to five continents in 130 days. I was so lucky to take part in it before, Sang said.
