Senators blank Devils to take series lead

Defenceman Tom Preissing scored 4:46 into the third period to lead the Ottawa Senators to a tight 2-0 NHL playoff victory over the New Jersey Devils on Monday night. Mike Comrie banked a shot off the end boards on a rush that came to Preissing on the right wing for a high blast. It beat Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur to the glove side - a vulnerable spot for the future Hall of Fame goalie for much of these playoffs.

Stern NBA wants to open league in China

NBA commissioner David Stern sees more of a need for new pro basketball teams in China than in North America. I think 30 teams is a nice, round number, and I would not be recommending to the NBA owners to expand, Stern said before Game 4 of the first-round playoff series between the Washington Wizards and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jays place Chacin on 15 day DL

The Toronto Blue Jays placed left-hander Gustavo Chacin on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain Monday night. The move is retroactive to April 29. Chacin, 2-1 with a 5.60 earned-run average in five starts, allowed four runs in 5 1-3 innings Saturday against Texas. He also spent time on the disabled list last year with a strained elbow.

Mets place El Duque Valentine on DL

The New York Mets got a double dose of bad medical news Monday: Starting pitcher Orlando Hernandez has bursitis in his right shoulder and second baseman Jose Valentin has a partially torn knee ligament. Both were put on the 15-day disabled list. Hernandez, who had been scheduled to start Monday night against Florida, was replaced by Chan Ho Park, who was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans.

Former Skins LB Mitchell passes away

Former NFL linebacker Kevin Mitchell died in his sleep at the age of 36. Mitchell died overnight Sunday at his home in Ashburn, near the Washington Redskins training facility, according to the team. An autopsy was performed Monday by the Virginia state medical examiners office. The cause of death was not immediately announced.

Bell adds defensive conscience to Suns

Contrary to popular belief, the Phoenix Suns do play defence. No one will confuse them with the Pistons or Spurs, but they are getting better. That improvement is a reason they believe they can win an NBA title, and a factor in their 3-1 first-round playoff series lead over the Los Angeles Lakers. The Suns can finish off Kobe Bryant & Co. at home on Wednesday night.

Milton Bradley couldnt have envisioned such a dire situation in Oaklands outfield. Billy Beane is getting gray hairs if he doesnt already have some, Bradley said in reference to the Athletics general manager, who must be emotionally taxed after pulling off two trades in three days to boost his beat-up roster.

Rangers continue to look for offence

Through three games, the New York Rangers have played well defensively. If they can solve Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller consistently, a series many thought would end quickly could go the distance.

Disgraced Hilton on comeback trail

Former boxing champion Dave Hilton took every second available to him to get ready for his comeback fight. Hilton lost almost three pounds in one hour and made the 157-pound weight limit for his comeback bout against Adam Green right at the deadline of 4 p.m. Monday.
