49ers promote Hostler to replace Turner

Redskins restructure QB Brunell s contract

The Washington Redskins finished restructuring Mark Brunells contract Wednesday, creating more space under the salary cap while ensuring he will return to the team next season. The team also re-signed offensive lineman Mike Pucillo and released tight end Christian Fauria.

Celts Szczerbiak done for the season

McCarthy powers Blackburn to Quarter finals

Substitute Benni McCarthy scored with four minutes remaining to give Blackburn a 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Wednesday and put his side in the last eight of the FA Cup. The South African striker, who came off the bench in the 60th minute of the fifth-round replay, raced down the left and cut inside Gunners defender Philippe Senderos before firing an angled 25-yard shot high inside the far post.

Copa del Rey match abanadoned

Sevillas Copa del Rey quarter-final with crosstown rival Real Betis was abandoned in the second half Wednesday after Sevilla coach Juande Ramos was knocked unconscious by a plastic bottle thrown from the crowd. Catalan station TV3 showed the bottle, which contained liquid and ice, hitting Ramos on the left side of his head. The coach, who stumbled before falling to the ground, was carried off on a stretcher but regained consciousness soon afterward, Betis doctor Tomas Calero told radio station Cadena SER.

Chisox Jenks leaves with tight shoulder

White Sox closer Bobby Jenks threw nine pitches Wednesday in Chicagos opening spring training game before being taken out against Colorado because of tightness in his right shoulder. Jenks, who led the White Sox with 41 saves last year and was an instrumental part of Chicagos late season run to the 2005 World Series, was to be evaluated Thursday.

MLB spring training roundup

Adam Wainwright threw the final pitch of last season and one of the first at spring training this year. Wainwright, who closed out the St. Louis Cardinals World Series win in October, opened his bid for a job in his teams rebuilt rotation with three hitless innings Wednesday in a 6-3 victory over the Florida Marlins.

Dickenson wants CFL to guarantee contracts

Quarterback Dave Dickenson accepts there are no guarantees in life, but questions why CFL teams wont offer guaranteed contracts to players. Dickenson, who was the most valuable player in the B.C. Lions Grey Cup victory last year, is entering the final year of a contract that pays him $400,000. He also could be released tomorrow and be owed nothing by the club.
