Verdasco advances in Las Vegas

Fernando Verdasco of Spain advanced to the quarter-finals of the Tennis Channel Open with a three set victory over Thailands Danai Udomchoke during round-robin play Wednesday. The fifth-seeded Verdasco had four double faults while losing the second set, and then took advantage of Udomchokes four double faults in the third.

Clippers get gritty win over SuperSonics

Corey Maggette scored 18 points, including a pair of tiebreaking free throws with 27 seconds left, leading the Los Angeles Clippers to a gritty 96-91 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics on Wednesday night. The Clippers played their first game since point guard Shaun Livingston tore three ligaments in his left knee and dislocated his kneecap. Sam Cassell, who came in averaging 26.7 minutes a game at age 37, played 34 minutes against the Sonics and had 16 points along with five assists.

OHL Bulls thump Frontenacs

Bartoli out Garbin moves on in Mexico

Top-seeded Marion Bartoli was a second- round victim at the $180,000 Abierto Mexicano Telcel tennis tournament. Bartoli was swept in the first set in a 6-0, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Julia Schruff. Second-seeded Tathiana Garbin needed just over one set before Zsofia Gubacsi retired in a 6-4, 3-0 win. Garbin is keeping the momentum from a runner-up finish in Bogota last week.

Iverson pours in 34 as Nuggets roll Magic

Allen Iverson scored 34 points, Carmelo Anthony added 23 and the Denver Nuggets held off the Orlando Magic 111-101 on Wednesday night. Linas Kleiza and Eduardo Najera provided sparks off the bench for Denver. Najera scored 17 points on 8 of 9 shooting and Kleiza added 15, including three 3-pointers.

Spring Training Roundup Wednesday

Adam Wainwright threw the final pitch of last season and one of the first at spring training this year. Wainwright, who closed out the St. Louis Cardinals World Series win in October, opened his bid for a job in his teams rebuilt rotation with three hitless innings Wednesday in a 6-3 victory over the Florida Marlins.

Harpring Boozer lead Jazz over Grizzlies

Carlos Boozer had 24 points and 16 rebounds, and reserve Matt Harpring added 25 points to lead the Utah Jazz to a 104-88 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night. Boozer shot 12-of-16 from the field and Harpring was 7-of-12, helping Utah overcome early shooting woes and finish the game at 54 per cent.

Celtics honour legend Johnson

Even Isiah Thomas paid tribute to Dennis Johnson on Wednesday night, wearing a pin in honour of the former Boston Celtics great whose career highlight came at Thomass expense. In Bostons first home game since Johnson died of an apparent heart attack last Thursday, the Boston Celtics honoured the five-time all-star during their game against the New York Knicks.

Paul powers Hornets past Hawks

Chris Paul had 24 points, 13 in the fourth quarter, Tyson Chandler added 18 points and 13 rebounds, and the New Orleans Hornets beat the Atlanta Hawks 107-100 Wednesday night. Devin Brown scored 19 points and David West 17 for the Hornets, who began the night a half-game behind the Los Angeles Clippers in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
