Svatos nets Avs shootout win

Marek Svatos scored one of Colorados three first-period goals and had the lone goal in a shootout to give the Avalanche a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night in the final exhibition game for both teams. Milan Hejduk and Tyler Arnason also scored for the Avalanche (5-1). Jose Theodore stopped 28 shots also made saves on shots by Alexander Frolov, Michael Cammalleri and Lauri Tukonen in the shootout.

OHL Saginaw grabs first win of the season

Patrick Asselin and Tom Pyatt scored a pair of goals each to lead the slumping Saginaw Spirit to their first victory of the season Saturday, 5-3 over the Windsor Spitfires.

Bean holds lead at Greater Hickory Classic

Indians deliver 100th loss to Devil Rays

Jake Westbrook allowed one run in seven innings and Casey Blake hit two solo homers to help the Cleveland Indians beat Tampa Bay 6-1 Saturday night, handing the Devil Rays their 100th loss. Tampa Bay became the first team in major league history to lose 100 games in a season despite having a winning record at home. The Devil Rays, who went 41-40 at Tropicana Field, are 20-60 on the road - including 3-32 away from home since July 1.

Hampton throws to batters for first time

One year and four days after his Tommy John surgery, Mike Hampton was back on the mound Saturday, throwing to batters for the first time. The test was graded excellent by Braves manager Bobby Cox, who already has Hampton listed in his early 2007 rotation as the left-hander returns from the reconstructive elbow surgery.

Blackhawks go Wild in Minnesota

QMJHL Olympiques beat Titan

The Gatineau Olympiques humbled two goalies as they racked up nine goals against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. The Olympiques also registered 16 assists. Claude Giroux, Gatineaus captain, led the team with three goals and one assist.

Journeyman McLeary wins for Pirates

Marty McLeary, a journeyman minor leaguer most of his career, pitched seven shutout innings in only his second major league start and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 Saturday night to end an eight-game losing streak. The Reds were mathematically eliminated from the NL Central race earlier in the day when the Cardinals beat the Brewers and they looked like it, doing nothing offensively against a 32-year-old right-hander pitching in only his eighth game in the majors.

Franco Glavine help Mets stomp Nats

The Washington Nationals announced Frank Robinson wont be their manager in 2007. The New York Mets said Pedro Martinez will miss the start of next season after shoulder surgery. And then the clubs went out Saturday night and played a game of far less significance than those two news items. That game does still count in the books, though, and Julio Franco made the most of it, tying a career high with five RBIs, helping Tom Glavine earn his 290th career win in the NL East champion Mets 13-0 victory over the last-place Nationals.
