A year after the Michelin tire fiasco threatened the future of Formula One racing in the United States, fans turned up at Indianapolis on Friday eager to put the past behind them.
While track officials did not announce attendance, it appeared thousands of enthusiastic fans took in the Friday session amid hints the sport would return in 2007.

Posey exercises option stays with Heat

James Posey was a key part of the Miami Heats run to the NBA championship. And he wants to be a part of the title defence, too.
Posey decided Friday to exercise his $6.4 million US option to stay with the Heat next season, electing not to become a free agent. He and the Heat will likely talk about a longer-term deal in the coming weeks, but for now, Posey simply wanted to ensure hed be back for the 2006-07 campaign.

Uribe drives in five to down Cubs

Juan Uribe homered and had five RBIs as the Chicago White Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 on Friday after the two central combatants in a brawl earlier this season chatted and shook hands.
Cubs catcher Michael Barrett apparently apologized to A.J. Pierzynski in the outfield before the game and the two were seen shaking hands. Barrett punched Pierzynski in the jaw after the White Sox catcher ran him over at the plate on May 20. Barrett returned Friday from the resulting 10-game suspension.

Switching Weavers Jered up Jeff demoted

The Angels swapped one Weaver brother for another Friday, designating right-hander Jeff for assignment and replacing him with right-hander Jered from triple-A Salt Lake.
Jeff Weaver was 3-10 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 games this season. Opponents were hitting .309 against him. Jered Weaver was 6-1 with two complete game shutouts and a 1.99 ERA in 12 games over two stints in Salt Lake.

Blue Jays Rios still in hospital

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios remained in hospital on Friday after having fluid drained from leg.
Rios will not be in the teams lineup on Friday against the Phillies, and no decision has been made yet on whether he will go on the DL. Rios was injured when he fouled a ball off his leg during Tuesdays 6-0 win over the Washington Nationals and was given Wednesday off when the area swelled.

Rays Hamilton cleared to play in minors

Troubled Tampa Bay prospect Josh Hamilton, on the restricted list the last two seasons, received permission from Major League Baseball on Friday to play in minor league games the rest of the year.

Avalanche re sign Clark Skrastins

The Colorado Avalanche re-signed defencemen Brett Clark and Karlis Skrastins to multiyear contracts on Friday.
Clark, 29, posted career highs with nine goals and 27 assists in 80 games.
Skrastins has played in 433 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NHL and the second-longest by a defenceman in hockey history - 53 behind Tim Hortons record.
