Resides: Necedah, WI
Primary Series: Nextel Cup
Sauter won the American Speed Association championship in 2001 with a record ten wins; that's 50 percent of the races. And to top it off, Sauter was an ASA rookie in 2001.
His accomplishments just add to the legend of the Sauter family. His Dad and two of his brothers (Jay and Tim) are well-known racers who have competed in everything from the local Late Model ranks of Wisconsin to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. In fact, Jim Sauter is a short track racing legend of whom former Cup champ Ned Jarrett once said, "If he would have moved down south sooner, he could have been one of the best ever."
Don't think for a moment, though, that young Johnny had things handed to him on a silver platter. His father, a carpet-layer by trade, knew only one way to help his kids, teach them to work hard.
My Dad was a firm believer in if you want something bad enough you'll find a way to work hard to get it," says Johnny, who only began racing in 1996 at Wisconsin Dells Speedway. "He was never in a position to help us financially. He gave us plenty of knowledge, but he couldn't pay for things for us. That's the way my brothers raced all their lives and that's the way I started too."
Johnny believes he is not only the person, but also the racer he is because of those family values.
"It has a lot to do with the way you're raised," explains Johnny,
who is one of eleven children. "We were just never handed anything. That goes a lot farther than somebody's Dad going out and buying his son a Late Model. I don't care if that's done; I just wasn't raised that way. And I think I'm better off for it."
