Sergio Garcia, despite a six-shot lead, lost the 2005 Wachovia Open to Vijay Singh.

Sergio Garcia despite a six-shot lead lost the Wachovia Open to Vijay Singh. The celebration was supposed to be for Sergio Garcia, who with six-shot lead heading into the final round, look like a lock to win. A six shot lead is supposed to an automatic victory with only four other players in PGA Tour history ever failing to win and none since Greg Norman's 1996 Masters.
Singh took advantage of a record-tying collapse by Garcia and a mistake by Jim Furyk to win the Wachovia Championship on the fourth playoff hole at Quail Hollow.
Garcia squandered his six-shot lead in 12 holes and regained the lead with consecutive birdies, only to slip into a tie when he went for the pin on the peninsula-green at the par-3 17th landing in the water for bogey. To top it all off Garcia was eliminated on the first playoff hole missing a 6-footer for par.
Hardly noticed while Garcia was collapsing was the spectacular play from Singh and Furyk. Both players closed with a 6-under 66 and all three finished at 12-under 276 before heading into the third straight playoff on the PGA Tour. Singh was involved in two of them, and both times, his opponent went into the water off the tee.
Ultimately, the collapse earn Sergio Garcia a dubious entry in the record books.
