An emotional Fred Funk claims his first PLAYERS Championship title.

It took five days and several long rain delays in the Ponte Vedra Beach area before the 2005 Players Championship at TCP at Sawgrass was finally won by Fred Funk.
The emotional Funk again displayed plenty of emotion on Monday's final round. Fred Funk fell over backwards laying on the green in disbelieve after narrowly missing a putt down the stretch. Then, when he made that five and a half foot putt on the 18th hole, he responded in a celebratory Fred Funk fashion, spiking his hat to the ground like a football in a touchdown celebration.
With his victory Fred gets to live with a towering Waterford crystal trophy and the knowledge that he beat the best field in golf
None of the top four PGA Tour players really threatened to win THE PLAYERS Championship. Even with Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen making it somewhat interesting for awhile on Sunday they finished tying for 12th. Two premier players, Phil Mickelson tied for 40th while Tiger Woods was tied for 53rd and neither player was a factor this week. Fred Funk is the oldest winner in the history of THE PLAYERS Championship after Adam Scott became the youngest player in the history of the tournament in 2004.
With the victory Funk earned $1.44 million including a five-year exemption on the PGA TOUR, not bad for a weeks worth of work.
