Jim Furyk capitalizes on a Tiger Wood's mistake to win the 2005 Cialis Western Open
Current PGA Tour News
The thought of coming up short again like Furyk has done three times this year already must have been on Jim's mind. Having former world number 1 Tiger Woods leading the chase from behind must have been daunting to say the lest but Furyk answered Woods' charge with three straight birdies and hung on to win the Western Open on Sunday.
The 2005 Cialis Western Open is Furyk's 10 victories on the PGA Tour but his first victory since his 2003 Buick Open win. Furyk battling injuries since 2003 has struggled to win on the PGA Tour, where previously he was good for a victory a year for 1997 - 2003.
The day did not start off well for Furyk, and he must have started to question his game after boggies on the 2nd and 3rd giving Ben Curtis the lead at that point. But After an impressive 23 foot birdie putt on the 4th hole Jim played himself back into the match.
Just as Furyk was finding his game, though, Woods was making a move. Starting the day behind by 5 strokes, Woods powered his way into the lead with back to back birdies followed up by an eagle to take the lead. This week, it was Tiger's turn to falter. After a three-putt bogey on the par-4 13, he followed that up with a awkward looking shot from the sand trap which after a huge swing only moved about 3 feet, and still in the sand trap.
With that mistake, Tiger all but lost to Jim with that missed bunker shot.
